NEW ROCHELLE, NEW YORK – The Marist water polo team (19-12, 11-1 MAAC) defeated Siena 10-4 and #19 Wagner 11-9 on Saturday to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season title and clinch the #1 seed in the MAAC Water Polo Championships.
Game One: Marist 10, Siena 4
Sophomore Jocelyn McQuade (Vancouver, British Columbia) led all Red Foxes in scoring with three goals, and three steals. Senior Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, California) added two goals, one assist and two steals. Sophomore Amanda Amorosa (Montreal, Quebec) had two assists and one goal scored with four steals. Four other Red Foxes registered a goal.
The Red Foxes jumped out to an early and never looked back. First quarter goals by J. Hamby, senior captain Hannah Levien (Davis, California), McQuade and junior captain Brooke Else (Lansdale, Pennsylvania) gave the Red Foxes a 4-0 lead heading into the second quarter. The defense held Siena scoreless for the second straight quarter, and the offense put up two more goals to take a 6-0 lead into halftime. Amorosa and J. Hamby scored the second quarter goals for Marist.
In the third quarter McQuade and senior captain Anna-Lena Hathaway (South Pasadena, California) scored goals, while Siena got its first two goals of the game to make it 8-2. McQuade scored her third goal of the day and Carballo scored her first in the fourth quarter as the Red Foxes took the game 10-4.
Junior goalie Skyler Henry (San Diego, California) made five saves and gave up two goals against in the win for Marist. Freshman goalie Jessica Hermosillo (La Mirada, California) came into the game in the fourth quarter and gave up two goals against.
Game Two: Marist 11, #19 Wagner 9
Senior Jessica Hamby scored a season-high and team-high five goals for the Red Foxes. Senior captain Alison Hamby (Sacramento, California) added two goals and two assists. McQuade scored two goals and had two assists, while Amorosa and Else each had one goal.
The Red Foxes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on goals by J. Hamby (2) and McQuade. Wagner scored the next goal, but Amorosa answered with a goal of her own 19 seconds later to regain the three goal lead. Wagner scored two goals to finish out the first quarter with a score of 4-3. In the second quarter J. Hamby and Else scored goals, and Wagner got one with four seconds left making the score 6-4 at halftime.
Another solid defensive effort let the Red Foxes gain a 9-5 advantage at the end of the third quarter. J. Hamby (2) and McQuade scored the third quarter goals for Marist. Wagner outscored the Red Foxes 4-2 in the final quarter of play, but A. Hamby's two goals were enough to give the Red Foxes the win and the MAAC regular season title.
Henry had a huge game making 15 saves and giving up nine goals against. The Red Foxes held Wagner to 2-for-7 on its man advantage opportunities.
The Red Foxes conclude their regular season on Sunday, April 12 with a non-conference game against Hartwick. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
