POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Monmouth on Saturday. The Red Foxes won the first game 13-4 via the mercy rule in six innings, but the Hawks rebounded for a 3-1 triumph in game two.

Here is a closer look at each game:

Game One – Marist 13, Monmouth 4 (6 innings)

The score was tied at four apiece entering the sixth, but Marist erupted for nine runs in its half of the inning to win by the mercy rule.

Freshman designated player Samantha Reilly singled to lead off the inning, and freshman left fielder Gabrielle Kelliher followed with a home run to put the Red Foxes up for good. Later in the inning, junior first baseman Maureen Duddy had an RBI double, junior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta added an RBI single, and sophomore right fielder Janna Korak drew a bases-loaded walk. With Marist holding a 9-4 lead and the bases loaded, Reilly belted a grand slam to end the game.

Reilly finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Van Natta was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Sophomore catcher Rebecca Freeman was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Korak and junior center fielder Colleen McWilliams were both 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. McWilliams belted a two-run homer in the second inning.

Senior Melanie White (12-10) pitched a complete game with four strikeouts. Sydney Underhill (3-12), who went five-plus innings, took the loss for Monmouth.

For the Hawks, right fielder Emma Hill scored three runs. First baseman Justene Reyes had a two-run homer in the third.

Game Two – Monmouth 3, Marist 1

A sacrifice fly by Monmouth second baseman Ashalynn Umiamaka brought home the game's first run in the top of the third, but Freeman answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning for the Red Foxes.

The game swung in the fifth inning. In the top of the inning, Monmouth designated player Raelynn Galindo hit a two-run homer to give the Hawks a two-run lead. In the bottom of the inning, Marist loaded the bases with none out. However, Monmouth's Amanda Riley pitched out of the jam by inducing a 5-2-3 double play and getting a strikeout.

Monmouth outhit Marist, 8-6. The Red Foxes left eight runners on base.

For Monmouth, Hill was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Left fielder Chloe Howerth was 2-for-4 with a double. Freeman, who went 2-for-4, was the only Red Fox with a multi-hit game.

Riley (5-5) pitched a complete game with three strikeouts. Sophomore Jayne Oberdorf (6-9) pitched a complete game with four strikeouts for the Red Foxes.

Marist is now 21-25 overall and 6-8 in the MAAC. Monmouth is 12-20 overall and 8-6 in conference play.

Marist returns to action on Sunday for its home finale, a home conference doubleheader against Fairfield. First pitch is scheduled for noon. At 11:45, the program will honor its senior class of White, Taylor Kuzma and Janine Lalli.
