Box Score 2 EASTON, Pennsylvania – The Marist softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader at Lafayette on Tuesday. The Red Foxes won the first game 6-2, and earned a 15-8 victory in the second games.
Marist had a total of 31 hits on the day. The Red Foxes were led individually by junior infielder Maureen Duddy and junior center fielder Colleen McWilliams with six apiece. Sophomore Jayne Oberdorf was the winning pitcher in each game as she improved her record to 8-9.
Here is a closer look at each game:
Game One – Marist 6, Lafayette 2
Marist grabbed a lead it would not relinquish by scoring four times in the top of the first. Senior second baseman Janine Lalli had a two-run triple in the frame. In the fourth, a sacrifice fly by Duddy brought home Lalli to give the Red Foxes a 5-0 advantage.
Lafayette scored two runs in the fifth with the aid of two Marist errors, but Marist closed out the scoring in the sixth on McWilliams' leadoff homer.
Oberdorf pitched a complete game six-hitter with two strikeouts. Both runs she permitted were unearned. Stephanie Thomas (2-12) pitched a complete game for Lafayette. Four of the six runs she allowed were unearned.
McWilliams led the way for the Red Foxes offensively by going 3-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored. Right fielder Allison Brown had two hits for the Leopards.
Game Two – Marist 15, Lafayette 8
The Red Foxes had 24 hits in the contest. Duddy led the way by going 5-for-6 with five runs scored, two stolen bases and a double. Four more Red Foxes – McWilliams, freshman Samantha Reilly, sophomore Rebecca Freeman, and sophomore Jordynn Barrera – had three hits apiece, while freshmen Gabrielle Kelliher and Kourtney Paul both had two hits.
Reilly, who didn't have her first at-bat until the fourth inning, went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, three runs scored and a home run. Barrera scored three runs, while Freeman and McWilliams drove in two runs apiece.
The Red Foxes scored in six different innings, and held a 6-0 lead after three-and-a-half. However, Lafayette grabbed the lead by scoring eight times in the bottom of the fourth. Marist scored twice in the fifth to tie the game, and took the lead for good on Reilly's three-run homer in the sixth. Marist ended up scoring five runs in the sixth, and added two more in the seventh.
Oberdorf allowed one run in 3.2 innings of relief to earn the victory. Bryn Gornick (0-2), who pitched 2.2 innings of relief, took the loss for Lafayette. Second baseman Samantha Sweigart went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored for the Leopards.
Marist is now 24-26 overall; Lafayette is 4-34. The Red Foxes will conclude the regular season with Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheaders at Manhattan on Saturday, and Saint Peter's on Sunday. At 7-9 in conference play, Marist currently sits in seventh place, one game behind Monmouth for sixth. The top six teams qualify for the MAAC Championships, which will begin on May 6.
