VILLANOVA, PENNSYLVANIA – The Marist water polo team (17-12, 9-1 MAAC) won two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games on Saturday afternoon to improve to 9-1 in conference play. The Red Foxes defeated St. Francis 18-4 in the first game of the day, before taking down Iona in sudden death overtime 10-9.
Game One: Marist 18, St. Francis 4
The Red Foxes had 10 players tally at least one goal. Senior captain Hannah Levien (Davis, California) had three goals and one assist with two steals. Redshirt junior Ellie Hoffman (Pasadena, California) added three goals and one assist with one steal. Senior captain Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, California) had three goals with two assists and a steal. Sophomore Amanda Amorosa had two goals, three assists and one assist.
The Red Foxes jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. J. Hamby (1), Levien (2), Hoffman (1), senior Alison Hamby (Sacramento, California) (1) and sophomore Jocelyn McQuade (Vancouver, British Columbia) (1) each scored goals to give Marist an early lead. In the second quarter the Red Foxes outscored St. Francis 4-1 to take a 10-1 lead into halftime. Sophomore Molly Shamieh (Sylmar, California), Amorosa, Levien and J. Hamby each scored one goal in the second.
In the third quarter the Red Foxes used another 4-1 effort to go up 14-2. Amorosa, McQuade, senior Jamison Mahar (Riverside, California) and sophomore Nastassia McGlothlin (Mission Viejo, California) scored the goals in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Amorosa (2), J. Hamby and junior captain Brooke Else (Lansdale, Pennsylvania) scored to end the game at 18-4.
Junior goalie Skyler Henry (San Diego, California) made four saves and had one goal against and had three steals in the first half of the game. In the second half, freshman goalie Jessica Hermosillo (La Mirada, California) made two saves and gave up three goals against with one assist.
Game Two: Marist 10, Iona 9 (Sudden Death)
It took until sudden death overtime to decide the winner, but the Red Foxes came out on top thanks in part to A. Hamby who had four goals, including the game-winner, and one assist with two steals. Amorosa had three goals, two assists, three steals and two field blocks. J. Hamby had two goals and a steal, while McQuade scored an overtime goal, and had two steals and a field block.
The Red Foxes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on goals from J. Hamby, Amorosa and A. Hamby. The second quarter scoring was 3-2 in favor of the Red Foxes. A. Hamby scored two goals and Amorosa had one to give Marist a 6-2 lead at halftime.
The Red Foxes were shut out in the third quarter and the Gaels scored three goals to pull the score to 6-5. J. Hamby scored the only goal of the fourth quarter, and Iona scored two to tie the game at 7-7 to send it into overtime. Amorosa scored the first overtime goal for Marist, but Iona had a goal of their own to force a second overtime period. In the second overtime both teams scored a goal to force sudden death. McQuade had the second overtime quarter goal for the Red Foxes. In sudden death, A. Hamby found the back of the net to give the Red Foxes the win.
Goalie Skyler Henry made 11 saves and gave up nine goals against with one steal in the win for Marist.
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, April 11 for two MAAC games against Siena and Wagner. The first game is scheduled for noon, with game two scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
