Lalli Plays Every Position as Marist Closes Season with Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – The Marist softball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Saint Peter's, winning by scores of 11-9 and 15-2 (five innings). However, due to other results around the MAAC on Sunday, the Red Foxes fell short of qualifying for the conference championships.

In the second game, senior Janine Lalli played every position on the field. She began the game as the designated player, and then pitched the first inning. She caught for one batter in the second inning, and then ended the inning as the designated player. In the third, she played first, second and third. She then played shortstop and left field in the fourth, and then center and right in the fifth before coming out of the game.

Freshman left fielder Gabrielle Kelliher led Marist on the day by going 4-for-6 with nine RBIs and four runs scored. Kelliher homered in both games of the doubleheader.

Here is a closer look at both games:

Game One – Marist 11, Saint Peter's 9

Kelliher went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, and she fell just a triple short of hitting for the cycle. Junior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta homered and drove in three runs. In the circle, sophomore Jayne Oberdorf (8-9) went the final 3.2 innings for the win.

Marist trailed 6-4 through four innings, but scored once in the fifth, four times in the sixth and twice in the seventh. In the Red Foxes' sixth, an RBI double by sophomore catcher Rebecca Freeman gave Marist the lead for good, and Kelliher added a two-run double in the inning.

Both teams totaled 11 hits. Tori Feorenzo took the loss for Saint Peter's. Center fielder Kirsten Kelly led the Peacocks offensively by going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Game Two – Marist 15, Saint Peter's 2 (five innings)

The game was tied at one through three innings before the Red Foxes erupted for a 10-run fourth. Marist had six hits in the inning, including a grand slam by freshman catcher Samantha Reilly. Lalli then followed with a homer of her own. The Red Foxes then expanded their lead with a four-run fifth, which included a two-run homer by Kelliher.

Pitching in her final collegiate game, senior Melanie White (16-11) pitched 1.2 innings of relief for the win. Sophomore Janna Korak made her collegiate pitching debut, and got the game's final two outs without giving up a run.

Kelliher and Reilly drove in four runs apiece. Lalli finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs, a double and a homer.

Feorenzo took the loss for the Peacocks, who were led offensively by second baseman Shamar Sanchez, who went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Marist concluded its season at 28-26 overall and 11-9 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes won their final six games of the season, and finished with a winning record both overall and in conference play for the fifth straight season.
