WEST LONG BRANCH, New Jersey – The Marist women's soccer team were defeated by the Monmouth Hawks 3-1 Saturday night in the team's first conference game of the season.
“Starting with a new lineup I think we showed really well and with the energy and passion we played with the chances are going to start to fall we just have to keep the same intensity,” said head coach Katherine Lyn. “I thought we played collectively as a whole, I'm proud of the way we showed tonight despite the result.”
The Red Foxes started sluggish and the Hawks were able to capitalize with a goal from Julie Spracklin from the top of the box just two minutes into the game. Marist steadied throughout the rest of the first half and we're able to capitalize when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 39th minute. Hope Quinonez stepped up and curled one to the top left for the first collegiate goal of her career.
The Red Foxes brought the momentum from their strong finish in the first half into the second and almost tallied a goal that would give them the lead when Juliette Loccisano had her goal called back by a foul.
Another chance in the 69th minute almost found net for the Red Foxes as well. Kerri Mcginley ended up one-on-one with the Monmouth keeper but put her shot high over the crossbar.
Monmouth turned the tide and scored quickly after the Marist miss. Erica Murphy scored her first of two goals in the 71st minute to gain a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The score really doesn't represent how we played. It was a very even game, they had their chances and we had ours,” said Lyn. “Credit to Monmouth they capitalized on the opportunities they had.”
Marist goalkeeper Makala Foley finished the game with two saves. Brianna Robinson led the Red Foxes in shots with three, one of which was on goal. In total Monmouth had 13 shots to the Red Foxes eight.
The team returns to action with more conference play on Saturday, September 26 as they host Rider.
