NEW HAVEN, Connecticut - The Marist men's swimming an diving team had its first tie in the 38-year history of the varsity program, pulling even with Southern Connecticut State at 149 points apiece on Jan. 9. The meet was the first for the Red Foxes in 2016 and brought them to 4-3-1 overall.
Marist went 1-2 in the 1,650-yard freestyle with junior Ryan Murphy (16:16.30) and freshman Miguel Basalo (17:01.50). Basalo also finished second in the 200-yard butterfly after clocking in at 1:56.77 for one of 11 finishes in the no. 2 spot in a swimming event for the Red Foxes.
Sophomore Robert McDowell finished second in a pair of backstroke events with times of 52.87 seconds at 100 yards and 1:54.92 at 200 yards. In the freestyle events, freshman Daniel Knoll placed second in the 50 (21.72 seconds), 100 (47.08 seconds) and 200 (1:44.47).
Sophomore Sam Presgraves churned out top times in the breaststroke, completing the 100-yard event in 1:01.93 and swimming 200 yards in 2:13.54.
The Red Foxes' diving duo of senior Josh Dodway and sophomore Peter Gallino each won an event. Dodway was victorious on the 1-meter board with a mark of 297.68 points and was second at three meters with 298.20 points. Gallino was right behind Dodway at one meter with 277.43 points. Gallino's 320.33 points at three meters was the best score of the afternoon and earned him a chance to compete at the NCAA Zone Qualifier Diving Championships this March.
After freshman Mark Miller won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:16.51, a 2-3-4 consecutive finish among the 200-yard freestyle relay squad gave Marist the same final point total as the Owls.
Marist will host Boston College at 1 p.m. Jan. 16 in the first of two straight meets in McCann Natatorium.
