SYRACUSE, New York – The Marist men's tennis team returned to action after winter break and took down the UConn Huskies Friday afternoon at the Turning Stone Resort in Syracuse, New York. The Red Foxes took care of business in all four doubles matches they played and earned victories in four out of the six singles matches held on the day.
“Our team started the season off on the right foot with a solid win over UConn.” said assistant coach Derek DiFazio. “It was a strong performance from the middle of our line-up that helped to start the 2016 season on a positive note.”
The doubles pairings of Justin Chanthalangsy and Paulo Siracusa, Fredrik Bjerke and Joe Motta, Jan Dernic and Timo Tanzer, and Carlos Moreno and Max Darrington all earned victories for the Red Foxes on the doubles side of action.
In singles play Fredrik Bjerke picked up his second win of the day defeating UConn's Christopher Toner in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Dylan Fletcher also defeated his UConn counterpart in straight sets while Jan Dernic and Timo Tanzer picked up singles wins for the Red Foxes in three set matches.
“Big kudos to the way everyone competed in doubles,” said team captain Julien Hochner. “It was also good to see that two of the four singles matches we won came down to a close tie breaker.”
The Red Foxes continue action at Turning Stone on Saturday, January 23rd with a matchup against Bryant and then continue on Sunday with a showdown against Binghamton before returning home.
