HARRISON, New York – The Marist men's tennis team took care of business, winning two matches on the day against Fordham University and Wagner College in two separate non-conference matches at the Sport Time Athletic Facilities. The Red Foxes took part in a shortened 1-4 format in both matches which includes just one doubles match and four singles matches that take place simultaneously for a total of five points.
"I'm very happy with the way we competed. Two matches in one day is not easy but the guys handled it with focus and intensity,” said head coach Tim Smith. “Kudos to Justin and Paulo who had a bad start in their doubles match but came back to overcome Fordham's doubles team."
In the Red Foxes first bout of action against Fordham, Justin Chanthalangsy and Paulo Siracuso bounced back from a 3-6 defeat in the first set to win 6-1, 6-3 in the next two and earn a point for the team.
In singles Fredrik Bjerke rebounded from a first set 2-6 loss to Fordham's Victor Li to win the match in the next two sets, 6-3, 6-3. Jan Dernic won from the third single's position, 6-1, 6-4 and Dylan Fletcher handled his match also winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Marist then moved on to play Wagner in the same type of 1-4 format. The pairing of Joe Motta and Fredrik Bjerke defeated Wagner's pairing of Eric Poland and Allen Wang, 6-4, 6-2.
Chanthalangsy won his second match of the day defeating Wagner's Dule Ray Sundy, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6. Dernic also earned his second match victory of the day in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Fletcher and Siracuso earned the final two points for the Red Foxes, with 6-4, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1 straight set victories, respectively.
With the two victories the Red Foxes move to 5-2 overall on the young season. The team returns to action on Saturday, March 12th with a match against Yale in New Haven, Connecticut. The following day the Red Foxes will then take on Fairfield and Stony Brook also in New Haven.
