Box Score 2 BALTIMORE, Maryland – The Marist softball team splits its two Saturday games at the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational. The Red Foxes lost to Morgan State 6-3 in their first game of the day, and rebounded for a 4-1 triumph over UMBC in their second game.
Here is a closer look at each game:
Game One – Morgan State 6, Marist 3
Freshman second baseman Claire Oberdorf went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Junior catcher Rebecca Freeman and sophomore designated player Gabrielle Kelliher were each 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Morgan State opened the scoring with single runs in the second and fourth, but Marist took the lead with three runs in the home half of the fourth. Freeman started a two-out rally with a single, and Kelliher followed with a double. After junior right fielder Janna Korak walked to load the bases, Oberdorf's double cleared them and put the Red Foxes in front, 3-2.
Marist maintained its one-run advantage until the top of the seventh, when Morgan State scored four runs. Three straight singles tied the game, and first baseman Audrianna Alvarez followed with a three-run homer.
Allison Hartman (1-0) pitched a complete game for Morgan State. Junior Jayne Oberdorf (0-1) took the loss in relief for Marist. Oberdorf relieved red-shirt junior Jessica Van Alphen, who struck out six and allowed just two hits in the first 5.1 innings. Freshman Kallen Leeseberg recorded the final two outs.
Game Two – Marist 4, UMBC 1
Senior first baseman Colleen McWilliams and Kelliher each went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Jayne Oberdorf (1-1) pitched a complete game seven-hitter with nine strikeouts.
Marist got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second on an RBI groundout by Claire Oberdorf. In the third, the Red Foxes expanded their lead to 3-0 on a two-run homer by Freeman.
UMBC scored a run in its half of the third, but Marist answered in the fifth as senior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta stole third and came home on a throwing error to give the Red Foxes a three-run lead back.
Morgan Peyou went 2-for-3 for UMBC. Nicole Casagrand pitched a complete game with four strikeouts.
The Red Foxes are now 10-4 on the season.
Marist will close out play at the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational on Sunday, when the Red Foxes face Mount St. Mary's. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
