Men's Tennis Beats Fairfield to Extend Winning Streak

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – The Marist men's tennis team won their fifth consecutive match, defeating the Fairfield Stags, 6-1, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Yale University.

While Fairfield and Marist are normally conference foes, the two faced off in non-conference action today as the two teams have a conference meeting set for later on in the season. The Red Foxes moved to 6-2 overall on the season with the victory.

“I was extremely pleased with the fact that we swept the doubles and in turn won five of the six singles matches,” said head coach Tim Smith. “Considering this was our first outdoor match I couldn't be any happier with the way the team played and conducted themselves.”

Returning to the court for the first time since wins against Fordham and Wagner, the Red Foxes picked it back up right where they left off and swept the doubles matches with wins from all three pairings. Joe Motta and Fredrik Bjerke led the way from the first doubles position and defeated Fairfield's Ofir Solomon and Brad Orban, 6-4.

The pairings of Rudolf Kurz and Dylan Fletcher and Justin Chanthalangsy and Paulo Siracusa also took care of business in their doubles matches, winning 6-0 and 7-5, respectively.

The Red Foxes carried the momentum into singles play, winning all but one singles match and doing so in straight sets. Kurz, Chanthalangsy, Bjerke, Siracusa and Fletcher all added onto their doubles wins with similarly dominant victories in singles play.

Marist also played the singles portion of their match against Yale today and will conclude the match with doubles play on Sunday, March 13th. The Red Foxes will then take on Stony Brook in their second match of the day in New Haven.
