Box Score BALTIMORE, Maryland – An RBI single by sophomore left fielder Gabrielle Kelliher in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Marist softball team to a 10-9 triumph over Mount St. Mary's in its final game of the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational on Sunday.
Kelliher finished 2-for-5 with four RBIs and a home run. Junior catcher Rebecca Freeman was 2-for-5 with three runs scored and a home run. Junior right fielder Janna Korak went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior first baseman Maureen Duddy and senior center fielder Colleen McWilliams each scored two runs. Freshman shortstop Claire Oberdorf drove in three runs.
Marist got off to a fast start, with five runs in the home half of the first, and three in the second. In the first, Obedorf belted a bases-clearing double. The Red Foxes scored all of their runs with two outs. Although they had just two hits in the inning, they drew three walks and benefitted from three Mount St. Mary's errors. Kelliher's three-run homer in the second propelled Marist to an 8-0 lead.
Mount St. Mary's bounced back to score four runs in the third, but Marist maintained an 8-4 lead until the bottom of the sixth, when Freeman belted a leadoff homer. However, in the top of the seventh, the Mountaineers pushed across one run and loaded the bases with one out. Shortstop Lindsay Heinze then belted a grand slam, which tied the score at nine apiece.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Red Foxes loaded the bases with one out. Kelliher's single up the middle brought home Duddy and gave the Red Foxes a walk-off victory.
Freshman Kallen Leeseberg (3-1) recorded the final two outs of the seventh for the victory. Marian Ruf (0-6) pitched a complete game for Mount St. Mary's.
Marist completed tournament play with a 4-1 record, and is now 11-4 this season. Five of the Red Foxes' wins have come by one run.
Marist returns to action next Friday through Sunday at the University of South Florida Under Armour Classic. The Red Foxes will play five games in three days, beginning with contests against Maine (9 a.m.) and UMass Lowell (11:45 a.m.) on Friday.
