NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – The Marist men's tennis team split two non-conference dual matches Sunday afternoon at the Yale Invitational. The Red Foxes concluded the doubles portion of their match against Yale and then defeated Stony Brook, 5-2, in their second match of the day.
Yale was able to defeat the Red Foxes in doubles play with wins from the first and third positions but not before a very competitive session of singles play the day prior. The Red Foxes took it to Yale in singles and pulled out victories in the second and sixth singles positions.
Rudolf Kurz defeated the Bulldog's Alex Hagermoser in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Dylan Fletcher then went on to defeat Yale's Jason Brown, 7-6, 6-3. In the fourth set Fredrik Bjerke fell to Yale's Martin Svenning in a close three set match, 7-6, 4-6. 6-2.
In the Red Foxes second bout of action on the day the team rebounded from their first loss in five consecutive matches and defeated Stony Brook.
The Seawolves were able to take early control of the match, winning at the first and third doubles positions and the first singles position. The Red Foxes didn't lose another match from there, taking control and winning all their remaining singles matches.
After dropping his first set, Justin Chanthalangsy picked up a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Stony Brook's Samuel Taieb. Bjerke and Jan Dernic both won their singles matches in straight sets while Dylan Fletcher and Timo Tanzer took care of their opposition in three set matches.
With the split the Red Foxes move to 7-3 on the season and now head into Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Marist will travel to Saint Peter's on Tuesday, March 22nd to face the Peacocks and kick-off their conference schedule.
