Box Score TAMPA, Florida – The Marist softball team was defeated by South Florida by a score of 9-0 on Monday in a game shortened to six innings due to the mercy rule.
The Red Foxes had four hits in the contest. Junior catcher Rebecca Freeman went 2-for-3. Senior first baseman Maureen Duddy had a triple in three at-bats, and junior right fielder Janna Korak had a double and a walk in two official at-bats.
For South Florida, center fielder Juli Weber was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Left fielder Astin Donovan was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Catcher Lee Ann Spivey was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
Marist had an immediate scoring chance when Duddy tripled to lead off the game, but she was stranded at third. South Florida scored its first run in the bottom of the first, and tacked on three more in the second.
The Bulls held a 4-0 lead until the sixth. With one out, Weber belted a two-run double, which was followed by an RBI double from right fielder Mia Fung. Spivey then belted a two-run homer, which made the score 9-0 and ended the game.
Junior Jayne Oberdorf (1-3) started and struck out three in 1.2 innings. Red-shirt junior Jessica Van Alphen gave the Red Foxes 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
For South Florida, Cheyenne Eggens started and went two innings. Susan Wysocki (7-3) followed with six strikeouts in four innings.
Marist is now 13-7; South Florida is now 25-9 with 17 straight victories.
