Box Score 2 DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – The Marist softball team swept a doubleheader from Bethune Cookman on Tuesday. The Red Foxes earned a 3-2 triumph in the first game, and prevailed 5-2 in game two.
Here is a closer look at each contest:
Game One – Marist 3, Bethune Cookman 2
Bethune Cookman opened the scoring with a run in the home half of the first, but Marist tied the game in the top of the third on a two-out bunt single by freshman catcher Claire Oberdorf, which scored senior third baseman Maureen Duddy.
The Red Foxes took the lead in the sixth when junior right fielder Janna Korak belted a two-out double, and came home on a single off the bat of senior center fielder Colleen McWilliams. However, Bethune Cookman tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out double by second baseman Sophia Ortega.
Marist scored the winning run with two outs in the seventh when sophomore left fielder Miranda Perez scooted home on a wild pitch.
Freshman Megan Beiermeister (6-0) got the final five outs for the victory in relief of freshman Kallen Leeseberg, who allowed just four hits, zero walks and two runs over the first 5.1. Bailey Conner (1-3) took the loss in relief of starter Sophia Anguiano, who went the first six innings.
Oberdorf went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Marist. Ortega was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Bethune Cookman.
Game Two – Marist 5, Bethune Cookman 2
Marist got on the scoreboard first in the second inning, when a two-out single from freshman center fielder Casey Page scored Korak. The Red Foxes then added back-to-back homers in the fourth from Korak and McWilliams to go up 4-0.
Marist added its final run in the fifth. Oberdorf belted a leadoff triple, and then took home on the front end of a one-out double steal with junior catcher Rebecca Freeman.
Bethune Cookman strung together four straight two-out singles in the sixth for its two runs.
For Marist, Korak finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Page went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and an RBI. Red-shirt junior Jessica Van Alphen (5-1) went the first 5.2 innings for the win, and Beiermeister got the final four outs for her first collegiate save.
Shortstop Brianna Sanders went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Bethune Cookman. Conner (1-4) went the first three innings, and Anguiano allowed one run over the final four innings.
With the wins, Marist is now 15-7 on the season. Bethune Cookman is 5-21.
