Box Score 2 DeLAND, Florida – The Marist softball team closed out its Spring Break trip to the state of Florida with a doubleheader sweep at Stetson on Wednesday. The Red Foxes earned a 3-1 victory in game one, and a come-from-behind 7-4 triumph in the second game.
Here is a closer look at each contest:
Game One – Marist 3, Stetson 1
Marist got off to a fast start with two runs in the top of the first. Senior first baseman Maureen Duddy led off with a single, stole second, and came home on an RBI single by senior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta, who would score two batters later on an RBI single by junior right fielder Janna Korak.
The Red Foxes tacked on a run in the fourth. Junior catcher Rebecca Freeman led off with a double. Sophomore Kourtney Paul came in to pinch run, and scored on an error, which put Marist up 3-0.
An RBI single by left fielder Kelsey Waters in the sixth cut Marist's lead to 3-1.
For Marist, junior Jayne Oberdorf pitched the first six innings, and was removed to start the bottom of the seventh. However, after a walk, passed ball, single and stolen base put runners on second and third with none out, Oberdorf re-entered. She retired the next three batters in order to end the game.
Duddy and Freeman each had two hits and a stolen base for the Red Foxes. Oberdorf (2-3) struck out four, and allowed just one run, one walk and six hits.
For Stetson, catcher Jessica Griffin was 2-for-3. Tori Perkins (7-2), who went the first four innings, took the loss. Chelsea Hostetler finished with three innings of scoreless relief.
Game Two – Marist 7, Stetson 4
Marist once again had a two-run first, as Freeman had a sacrifice fly, and senior first baseman Colleen McWilliams added an RBI double. However, Stetson grabbed the lead with a three-run fourth, highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of third baseman Brittany Hawn.
The Red Foxes re-claimed the lead with a five-run sixth. A one-out double by Van Natta plated Duddy, and an RBI single by Freeman brought home freshman catcher Claire Oberdorf with the go-ahead run. Korak followed with her second homer in as many days, a three-run shot.
Four Red Foxes – Duddy, Van Natta, Freeman and Korak – had two hits apiece. Red-shirt junior Jessica Van Alphen (6-1) struck out five and allowed one run in 3.1 innings of relief for the victory.
For Stetson, Waters was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Curstin Taylor (2-2) took the loss.
Marist is now 17-7 overall. Stetson is 23-13. The Red Foxes have now won four straight. Marist captured six of its nine games in Florida over the past six days.
Marist will return on Wednesday, March 30, when the Red Foxes host Cornell for a doubleheader in their home opener. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
