Box Score 2 POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team split a home Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader with Manhattan on Sunday at Gartland Field. The Jaspers captured the first contest by a score of 4-3 in eight innings, but the Red Foxes bounced back for a 10-5 victory in game two.
Here is a closer look at both games.
Game One – Manhattan 4, Marist 3 (eight innings)
Marist jumped out to a 3-0 lead with one run in the second, and two in the third. In the second, a one-out single by freshman third baseman Brandi Coon brought home junior right fielder Janna Korak. The next inning, a two-out, two-run single by senior designated player Colleen McWilliams scored freshman second baseman Claire Oberdorf and senior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta.
Manhattan cut its deficit to one run in the fourth. Catcher Elena Bowman led off by drawing a walk on an eight-pitch at bat. First baseman Jenn Vazquez then homered to center field on the eight pitch of her plate appearance, which made the score 3-2.
In the top of the seventh, Manhattan tied the game on an RBI single by right fielder Shannon Puthe. Red-shirt junior Jessica Van Alphen came on in relief with runners on first and second and one out, and struck out the first two hitters she faced to escape the jam. Marist had runners on first and second in its half of the seventh, but was unable to score the winning run. Bowman then gave Manhattan its first lead of the game with a leadoff homer in the eighth.
Briana Matazinsky (4-4) pitched a complete game for Manhattan with six strikeouts. Van Alphen (7-2) took the loss, but all five of her outs were strikeouts. She relieved junior Jayne Oberdorf, who struck out five and gave up just four hits in 6.1 innings.
McWilliams, Oberdorf and senior first baseman Maureen Duddy all had two hits apiece for the Red Foxes, who outhit the Jaspers 10-5. However, the Red Foxes left 11 runners on base.
Game Two – Marist 10, Manhattan 5
Manhattan scored in the top of the first, but Marist answered on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Rebecca Freeman, which brought home Duddy, who led off the inning with a double. The Red Foxes then scored four times in the second, an inning which included RBI singles by Claire Oberdorf, Van Natta and Korak.
Manhattan then tied the game in the fifth with a four-run inning of its own in which the Jaspers sent 10 batters to the plate, drew four walks and had only one hit. Marist answered with a four-run bottom of the fifth, which featured consecutive two-out, two-run singles by Duddy and Claire Oberdorf. The Red Foxes tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on an infield error.
Van Alphen (8-2) came out of the bullpen for 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, which included three strikeouts, for the victory. She relieved starter Megan Beiermeister, who went the first 4.2 innings. Danielle Gabriel (2-2) took the loss for Manhattan.
For Marist, Duddy went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two RBIs, two stolen bases and a double. Oberdorf was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a run scored and two stolen bases. Freshman center fielder Casey Page was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. For Manhattan, third baseman Victoria Ross was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Bowman drew walks in all five of her plate appearances, including two intentional free passes, and saw one strike the entire game.
Marist is now 24-8 overall and 3-1 in MAAC play. Manhattan is 15-9 overall and 3-1 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes will return to action on Wednesday, April 13, when they host Hartford in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
