Men's Tennis Beats Fairfield and Extends Winning Streak

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's tennis team bounced back after dropping the doubles point and defeated the Fairfield Stags, 6-1, Thursday afternoon at the Marist Tennis Pavilion. With the win the Red Foxes have now won six straight matches and stand at 12-3 overall and 4-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.

“It was a good comeback for our first (Kurz) and fourth (Dernic) singles matches,” said head coach Tim Smith. “We're in a pretty good place right now and we're excited for our match against Quinnipiac on Saturday.”

The Stags jumped out to an early lead in the match after Brad Orban and Ofir Solomon defeated Fredrik Bjerke and Joe Motta, 6-2. Rudolf Kurz and Dylan Fletcher then leveled the doubles portion of the match at 1-1 after they defeated Fairfield's Luke Lemieux and Dylan Appel, 6-2.

Fairfield was able to secure the doubles point at the second position as the Stag's Jeffrey Rodgers and Anthony Caputo defeated Justin Chanthalangsy and Paulo Siracusa, 6-3.

It was a different story in singles play however as the Red Foxes dominated and didn't drop a match for the remainder. Fletcher kicked it off for Marist winning his second match of the day, defeating the Stag's Fabriel Pamich, 6-0, 6-0.

Bjerke then won his match against Appel, 6-2, 6-3, from the third singles position before Chanthalnagsy defeated Rodgers, 6-0, 6-3, from the second spot. Siracusa then clinched the match for the Red Foxes when he took down Lemieux, 6-2, 6-3.

Kurz won his second match of the day, bouncing back from a 3-6 first set loss to defeat Orban in the second set, 6-2, and then in the super tiebreaker 10-3. Jan Dernic also took his match against Caputo after failing to win his first set but then bouncing back to win the second set and super tiebreaker.

“I felt good even after losing my first set,” said Dernic. “I just kept fighting and I was able to scramble in my second set and then I pulled it out in the super tiebreaker.”

The Red Foxes travel for a match against Quinnipiac on Saturday, April 16 in Hamden, Connecticut. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
