Box Score 2 POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Junior Jayne Oberdorf pitched a no-hitter in the first game, and her sister, freshman second baseman Claire Oberdorf, homered in the second game as the Marist softball team swept Quinnipiac in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday at Gartland Field.
The Red Foxes won game one, which was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule, by a score of 8-0. They prevailed 4-1 in game two.
Here is a closer look at each game:
Game One – Marist 8, Quinnipiac 0 (5 innings)
Jayne Oberdorf (6-3) needed just 59 pitches to get through her outing, 40 of which were strikes. She pitched 1-2-3 innings in the first, third, and fifth. The only two batters to reach base were via a wild pitch on strike three in the second, and a walk in the fourth. Oberdorf struck out five.
Marist scored twice in the first inning on a pair of infield groundball RBIs from senior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta and junior catcher Rebecca Freeman. In the third, Van Natta belted a one-out double, and scored from second on a two-out single by junior right fielder Janna Korak.
An RBI single by Claire Oberdorf, followed by a two-run homer by Van Natta, gave Marist a 6-0 lead in the fourth. The Red Foxes ended the game by the mercy rule in their half of the fifth. Senior center fielder Colleen McWilliams led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a double by sophomore designated player Gabrielle Kelliher. Sophomore third baseman Brittany Colombo then ended the game with a double to the left-center gap, which scored Kelliher.
Van Natta finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman left fielder Casey Page, Oberdorf, and McWilliams also had two hits apiece.
Starter Sydney Robey (6-10) took the loss for Quinnipiac.
Game Two – Marist 4, Quinnipiac 1
Marist opened the scoring in the second. Korak led off with a single, and scored on a one-out single by Colombo. In the fourth, Kelliher reached on a leadoff single, and came home on a two-out single by senior first baseman Maureen Duddy.
A pinch-hit RBI single by Robey in the top of the fourth cut Marist's lead in half, but the Red Foxes got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff homer by Oberdorf to straightaway center. Marist scored the game's final run in the sixth when McWilliams came home on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Page.
Red-shirt junior Jessica Van Alphen (9-2) earned a complete game victory by pitching a four-hitter. Van Alphen struck out four and walked just one. She threw 71 of her 103 pitches for strikes.
For Quinnpiac, center fielder Keilani Finley went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and run scored. Casey Herzog (9-9) pitched a complete game with three strikeouts.
Marist improved to 30-8 overall and 7-1 in MAAC play. The Red Foxes have now won seven straight. It is the sixth time the program has had a 30-win season in its 25-year history. Quinnipiac is 16-20 overall and 2-4 in the MAAC.
Marist will return to action on Wednesday, when the Red Foxes close out their 16-game homestand with a non-conference doubleheader against Holy Cross. First pitch of game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
