Box Score 2 LAWRENCEVILLE, New Jersey – The Marist softball team's winning streak has reached 13 following a doubleheader sweep at Rider in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Sunday. The Red Foxes won the first game 11-0 in six innings. In game two, the Red Foxes battled back from a three-run deficit in the seventh inning to earn a 9-8 triumph in eight innings.
Freshman second baseman Claire Oberdorf totaled six hits, five runs, four RBIs, and a stolen base on the day. Senior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta had five hits, six RBIs, four runs, and two stolen bases. Senior first baseman Maureen Duddy totaled five hits, four runs, and three stolen bases. Junior right fielder Janna Korak totaled five hits, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Offensively, the Red Foxes did not strike out in either game.
Here is a closer look at both games:
Game One – Marist 11, Rider 0 (6 inn.)
The Red Foxes scored runs in five different innings – one in the first, two in the third, one in the fourth, three in the fifth, and four in the sixth. They totaled 15 hits and five stolen bases.
In the first, Oberdorf tripled with one out, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Van Natta. In the third, an Oberdorf double brought home Duddy, and a bunt single by Van Natta plated Oberdorf. An infield single by freshman left fielder Casey Page brought home sophomore designated player Gabrielle Kelliher and made it 4-0 in the fourth.
Marist added three runs in the fifth thanks to an RBI single by Van Natta, a sacrifice fly from junior catcher Rebecca Freeman, and an RBI by Korak on an infield error. The Red Foxes then put the game away with a four-run sixth, an inning in which Marist sent 10 to the plate and had six singles.
In the circle, junior Jayne Oberdorf (8-3) won her seventh consecutive decision and tossed a two-hitter for her second complete game shutout of the season. Oberdorf struck out six and walked just one.
Claire Oberdorf went 3-for-3 with four runs, two RBIs, a stolen base, and was just a homer short of hitting for the cycle. Van Natta was 3-for-3 with four RBIs, two runs, and two stolen bases.
For Rider, Megan Ailand (1-14) pitched a complete game. Shortstop Monica Clark had a double.
Game Two – Marist 9, Rider 8 (8 inn.)
The contest was scoreless until the Broncs put up a three-run fourth, which included a two-run single by second baseman Morgan Benedetti. Marist cut its deficit to on RBI singles by Claire Oberdorf and Kelliher in the fifth and sixth, respectively. But a two-run homer by third baseman Emily Cottrell gave Rider a 5-2 lead going to the seventh.
Oberdorf started a seventh-inning rally with a one-out double, and advanced to third on an infield single by Van Natta. A sacrifice fly by Freeman brought home Oberdorf, which made the score 5-3 with two outs. Korak followed by belting a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right-center for a game-tying home run.
After freshman Megan Beiermeister retired the Broncs in order in the bottom of the seventh, Marist scored four times in the top of the eighth. In a pinch-hitting appearance, sophomore Brittany Colombo was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Page and Duddy followed with bunt singles to load the bases. Oberdorf's sacrifice fly gave Marist its first lead in the game. After an error made the score 7-5, Van Natta belted a two-run homer.
Rider battled back with three runs in the bottom of the eighth, but Beiermeister recorded a game-ending strikeout with the tying run at first.
Korak finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Oberdorf was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Duddy went 3-for-5 with two runs and two stolen bases. Beiermeister, who struck out five in the final 2.2, earned the win and improved to 11-0. Red-shirt junior Jessica Van Alphen started and fanned a season-high eight in 5.1.
For Rider, Cottrell finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Kaitlyn Kallert (2-14) pitched a complete game.
Marist is now 36-8 overall and 11-1 in the MAAC. Rider is 5-34 overall and 2-10 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes return to action on Thursday with a doubleheader at Army West Point. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 5 p.m.
