Box Score 2 POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Boston University on Wednesday afternoon at Gartland Field, and extended its winning streak to 10 games. The Red Foxes recorded a 9-3 triumph in game one, and rallied from three runs down in the seventh for a 5-4 victory in game two.
Here's a closer look at both games:
Game One – Marist 9, Boston University 3
Freshman second baseman Claire Oberdorf went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored and her first collegiate home run. She paced a Marist offense which produced 14 hits, three homers and six stolen bases in the game. Senior designated player Colleen McWilliams went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Freshman third baseman Brandi Coon went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Freshman center fielder Casey Page went 2-for-4 with a run scored and stole three bases. Senior first baseman Maureen Duddy was 1-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and two steals.
Boston University scored first with a run its first at-bat, but Marist took the lead for good with a five-run second which included six consecutive hits. Coon started the rally with a one-out single, and scored two batters later on an RBI single from Duddy. Page then stole home on front end of a double steal with Duddy, which gave Marist a 2-1 lead. Oberdorf then belted a two-run homer, and senior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta followed with a solo shot.
The Terriers cut their deficit in half with a two-run fourth, but Marist made the score 6-3 when McWilliams led off the fifth with a towering home run down the right field line. The Red Foxes then extended their lead in the sixth thanks to an RBI single from McWilliams and a two-run single by Coon.
Freshman Megan Beiermeister started and improved to 8-0. Beiermeister tossed the first four innings. She was relieved by freshman Brooke Peterson, who went 1.1 scoreless. Red-shirt junior Jessica Van Alphen entered with a three-run lead, and recorded the final five outs for her third save.
For Boston University, second baseman Alexa Ponce went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a double. Starter Lauren Hynes (8-9) took the loss.
Game Two – Marist 5, Boston University 4
The Terriers scored the first four runs of the game, with three in the second and one in the third. Marist fought back with a run in the third. Van Natta doubled to right field with one out, and scored when junior right fielder Janna Korak belted a two-out double to left-center field that hit the top of the wall on the fly, and then bounced back into play.
Marist left the bases loaded in the fifth, and still trailed 4-1 entering its final at-bat. With one out, Van Natta was hit by a pitch. On a 3-1 pitch, McWilliams hit a foul ball that was dropped for an error, which enabled her at-bat to continue. She drew a walk on the next pitch. Korak then belted the first pitch of her at-bat over the wall in left field for a game-tying three-run homer.
Senior Rebecca Freeman followed in a pinch-hitting appearance, and grounded a single up the middle. With two outs, sophomore designated player Gabrielle Kelliher hit a hard, sinking line drive to center field. Boston University center fielder Jilee Schanda dove, but the ball hit off her glove and deflected into right-center field. Freeman scored from first on Kelliher's double, and the Red Foxes walked off with a 5-4 victory.
Korak finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Junior Jayne Oberdorf (4-3) pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the victory in relief of freshman Kallen Leeseberg, who started and went the first four innings.
For Boston University, Ponce had a two-run single in the Terriers' three-run second. Melanie Russell (1-6) pitched a complete game and struck out seven.
Marist is now 23-7 overall. Boston University is 11-18.
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, when they host Manhattan in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Gartland Field. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon.
