Box Score 2 NEW ROCHELLE, New York – The Marist softball team has extended its winning streak to 16 with a sweep of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Iona on Saturday. The Red Foxes won the first game by a score of 8-2, and earned an 11-1 triumph in six innings in game two.
Junior catcher Rebecca Freeman led the Red Foxes with seven RBIs on the day, six of which came in game two.
Here is a closer look at both games:
Game One – Marist 8, Iona 2
After spotting Iona a run in the bottom of the first, Marist tied the game in the third on back-to-back one-out doubles by senior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta and Freeman.
Iona took the lead back in the bottom of the third, but Marist went in front for good with a five-run fifth in which the Red Foxes had just two hits – an RBI single by junior right fielder Janna Korak, and a two-run single by sophomore Brittany Colombo in a pinch-hitting appearance. In the inning, Marist was aided by two walk, a hit by pitch, and an Iona error. The Red Foxes scored all of their runs with two outs.
Marist added a pair of runs to close out the scoring in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Korak, and an RBI double by senior center fielder Colleen McWilliams.
Junior Jayne Oberdorf (10-3) won her ninth straight decision. Oberdorf struck out six in 6.2 innings and walked just two. Red-shirt junior Jessica Van Alphen got the final out. Offensively, Van Natta finished 1-for-3 with three runs scored and three stolen bases. McWilliams was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Korak and Colombo each drove in two runs.
For Iona, Christine Costello (5-9), who pitched 4.2 innings, took the loss. At the plate, Costello led the Gaels by going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Game Two – Marist 11, Iona 1 (6 innings)
Freeman began Marist's offensive output with a leadoff homer in the second. The following inning, her RBI double, followed by Korak's RBI triple, gave the Red Foxes a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth, Marist added a pair of runs. Freshman third baseman Brandi Coon reached on a one-out single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on an RBI single by senior first baseman Maureen Duddy. Duddy then stole second, and advanced two bases on two errors.
The Red Foxes then broke the game open with a six-run fifth. After Van Natta drew a bases loaded walk, Freeman belted her second home run of the game, a grand slam which gave Marist a 10-0 lead. The Red Foxes added their final run due to an error.
Freeman finished the game 3-for-3 with six RBIs, two homers, and a double. Duddy was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base. Coon was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Korak was 2-for-4 with an RBI. In the circle, freshman Megan Beiermeister improved to 12-0 with her second complete game. Beiermeister threw a four-hitter and struck out three.
For Iona, catcher Brianna King had an RBI double in the sixth. Carly Argyle (2-6), who started and went the first 5.1 innings, took the loss.
Marist is now 39-8 overall and 13-1 in the MAAC. Iona is 11-29 overall and 5-9 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday with a doubleheader at Fairfield at noon.
