Box Score FAIRFIELD, Connecticut – The Marist softball team won at Fairfield by a score of 7-2 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Wednesday. Freshman second baseman Claire Oberdorf homered twice, and the Red Foxes scored six runs in the sixth inning as they won their 17th straight game and 40th of the season.
The Red Foxes and Stags were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader, but the second game was called off during the umpires' meeting as rain intensified. The teams will make up the second game on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Fairfield.
A sacrifice fly by third baseman Nicole Capra in the bottom of the second gave the Stags a 1-0 lead. The Red Foxes tied the game in the top of the fourth on a leadoff homer by Oberdorf. In the fifth, Fairfield took back a one-run lead on a two-out RBI single by catcher Tori Reed.
Marist then scored six runs in its next trip to the plate. After senior first baseman Maureen Duddy reached on an infield single to lead off the inning, Oberdorf's second homer of the game gave Marist the lead for good at 3-2. Senior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta then walked, and junior catcher Rebecca Freeman followed with a single. Junior right fielder Janna Korak then homered over the left field wall, which gave Marist a 6-2 advantage. An RBI double by freshman third baseman Brandi Coon brought home sophomore designated player Gabrielle Kelliher with the final run of the game.
Junior Jayne Oberdorf (11-3) won her 10th consecutive decision. Oberdorf pitched a complete game four-hitter, and allowed just two walks while striking out one. She retired the final seven Stags she faced.
Destinee Pallotto (9-12), who started and went five-plus innings, took the loss.
Marist is now 40-8 overall and 14-1 in the MAAC. Fairfield is 23-21 overall and 9-8 in MAAC play.
At this time, Marist is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, when the Red Foxes host Canisius in a MAAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Prior to the game, Marist will hold its Senior Day ceremony as Duddy, Van Natta and Colleen McWilliams will be honored.
