POUGHKEEPSIE, New York- The Marist women's soccer team came away with a 2-0 home win over the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders on Wednesday night. The Red Foxes improve to 3-4 overall while the Highlanders move to 4-3-2.
"We played as a unit," said head coach Kate Lyn. "All in all I'm really proud of them, we dominated statistically and it showed. Overall if we keep this energy in how we play and what we're looking to accomplish, we're going to achieve a lot more."
Marist dominated the offensive possessions for the majority of the first half and the game. In the first half, the Red Foxes held NJIT to only two shots on goal while Marist had a total of nine shots and four shots on goal.
The second half opened with a big opportunity for Marist to get on the board less than five minutes in. A quick move from Kristen Reilly by an NJIT defender led to a shot on goal and a diving save from the keeper. The ensuing rebound led to a shot by Keri Bradley that was blocked directly over to Brianna Robinson who then fired another shot that went just high.
Marist finally cracked the NJIT defense and took the lead over the Highlanders in the 53rd minute. Robinson played the ball from the middle just outside the box over to Bradley who then blistered a shot into the low left corner of net past the diving Highlander keeper.
Less than two minutes after that Marist struck again and made the lead 2-0. A long ball from Hope Quinonez found Camille Bowen who then calmly chipped the ball over the keeper into the high right corner.
Marist ended the game with 20 shots overall, 10 of which were on goal. Ashley Houghton who subbed in to rest starting goalkeeper Makala Foley, finished the game with one save and the win.
The Red Foxes return to Tenney Stadium on Saturday, September 17th to begin Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play against Monmouth University at 4 p.m.Â
