Box Score 2 BALTIMORE, Maryland - The Marist softball team splits a pair of games on Sunday. The Red Foxes defeated Coppin State by a score of 6-3, but then was defeated by Morgan State 4-2. Both games took place at Coppin State.
Here is a closer look at each contest:
Marist 6, Coppin State 3
The Red Foxes opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the second. Freshman shortstop Jade Sinskul's RBI groundout plated junior left fielder Gabrielle Kelliher. Junior center fielder Kourtney Paul followed with a two-out, two-run triple as the Red Foxes ran their lead to 3-0.
Coppin State tied the score with a three-run fourth, an inning which opened with three consecutive hits. However, Marist grabbed the lead for good with three in the sixth. Senior right fielder Janna Korak led off with a double, and Kelliher followed with a four-pitch walk. In a pinch-hitting appearance, junior Miranda Perez laid down a successful sacrifice to put Korak and Kelliher in scoring position. Freshman third baseman Amanda Sartori then brought both home with a double. Paul then reached on an error, and was credited with her third RBI of the game as Sartori came in.
Red-shirt senior Jessica Van Alphen (1-1) earned the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief of sophomore starter Brooke Peterson. Van Alphen allowed just one hit and struck out four. Senior Jayne Oberdorf entered with one out in the sixth and the tying run at the plate, and proceeded to strike out the next two hitters. She then tossed a 1-2-3 seventh.
For Coppin State, third baseman Cayla Brown and second baseman Patricia Soria finished with two hits apiece. Madison Didion (1-4) pitched a complete game with five strikeouts.
Morgan State 4, Marist 2
In the top of the third, sophomore center fielder Casey Page reached on a bunt single and moved sophomore second baseman Brandi Coon to third. Page then stole second, and an RBI single by Perez scored Coon and moved Page to third. Page then stole home, which put Marist up 2-0.
However, Morgan State took the lead for good with a four-run fourth, which included four hits and two Marist errors. A two-run homer by designated player Haylee Bobos gave the Bears the lead for good.
Sophomore Kallen Leeseberg (0-1) took the loss for the Red Foxes. Leeseberg recorded strikeouts for 10 of the 11 outs she recorded, and all four runs she permitted were unearned. Sophomore Megan Beiermeister followed with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts and only one hit allowed. Amy Begg (1-0) pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts for Morgan State.
Marist finished its first weekend of play at 2-2. The Red Foxes return to action next weekend at the Black & Orange Challenge, hosted by Mercer. Marist will play five games in three days from Feb. 24-26.
