Softball Splits At Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Massachusetts – The Marist softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Holy Cross on Wednesday. The Red Foxes dropped the first game by a score of 9-3, but prevailed 7-2 in game two.

Here is a closer look at each contest:

Game One – Holy Cross 9, Marist 3

The Crusaders scored four runs in the first inning without a hit. Marist scored its first run in the top of the third as sophomore Brandi Coon reached on catcher's interference with the bases loaded, which forced home senior Janna Korak.

Holy Cross answered with a run in the bottom of the third, but Marist cut its deficit to 5-3 with a two-run fifth. Sophomore Casey Page's fielder's choice scored junior Gabrielle Kelliher, and junior Miranda Perez followed with an infield single, which plated Coon. However, the Crusaders extended their lead with a run in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Perez finished 3-for-3 for Marist. Sophomore starter Brooke Peterson (1-2) took the loss.

For Holy Cross, Alexandra Held (4-7) pitched a complete game for the victory. Kylee Malouf went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Game Two – Marist 7, Holy Cross 2

Marist got on the scoreboard in its first at-bat. Korak singled, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by senior Rebecca Freeman. Holy Cross tied the game in the bottom of the first, but Korak's grand slam in the top of the second lifted the Red Foxes to a 5-1 lead.

The Red Foxes added a run in the fifth when Perez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Korak's RBI single in the seventh closed out the scoring.

Korak finished 2-for-5 with five RBIs. The Red Foxes stole nine bases in the contest, led by junior Brittany Colombo with three. In the circle, sophomore Megan Beiermeister (7-3) went the first four innings for the victory, and senior Jayne Oberdorf went the final three innings for her third save. Beiermeister and Oberdorf did not issue a walk in the contest.

For Holy Cross, Emily Krisanda and Sydney Burr each had two hits and an RBI. Starter Olivia Sloane (1-4) took the loss in the circle.

Marist is now 21-14 overall; Holy Cross is 6-20. The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, when they head to Quinnipiac for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for noon.
