Softball Swept At Quinnipiac

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Marist softball team was swept in a doubleheader at Quinnipiac on Saturday. The Red Foxes dropped a pair of one-run games as the Bobcats prevailed in their final at-bat in both contests by scores of 5-4 and 3-2.

Here is a closer look at each game:

Game One – Quinnipiac 5, Marist 4

A two-run single by Lexi Courtney gave Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Red Foxes tied the game in the third. Senior Janna Korak's double brought home sophomore Casey Page, and then junior Gabrielle Kelliher singled to score junior Miranda Perez.

The score remained tied at two until an eventful seventh inning. In the top of the frame, Korak's hard line drive to left was dropped, resulting in a sacrifice fly as Page scored. Then, Kelliher doubled to center, which brought home Korak to make the score 4-2.

However, Quinnipiac won the game with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Miranda Magana's one-out RBI single brought the Bobcats to within one. With two outs, Rebecca Drake's two-run single won the game for Quinnipiac.

For Marist, Kelliher and Page had two hits apiece, with Kelliher and Korak having two RBIs apiece. Drake went 4-for-4 with two RBIs for Quinnipiac.

Red-shirt senior Jessica Van Alphen (7-3), who went the first 6.1 innings, took the loss. Casey Herzog (7-9) pitched a complete game to get the win for the Bobcats.

Game Two – Quinnipiac 3, Marist 2

A pitchers' duel between Marist senior Jayne Oberdorf and Quinnipiac's Abbey Long resulted in a scoreless tie through four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, the Bobcats scored the game's first run on an infield error.

In the top of sixth, junior Brittany Colombo's two-run, two-out single brought home junior Kourtney Paul and sophomore Brandi Coon to give Marist a 2-1 lead. Quinnipiac answered in its half of the inning as Taylor Troyan's two-run double put the Bobcats back up by one and provided the final margin.

Both Oberdorf (3-3) and Long (9-8) pitched complete games. Oberdorf struck out eight and did not walk any, and struck out the side in the fourth. Long had four strikeouts.

Marist is now 21-16 overall and 3-5 in the MAAC; Quinnipiac is 18-18 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

The Red Foxes return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Boston University for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
