Box Score 2 JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – The Marist softball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Saint Peter's on Saturday. The Red Foxes won 9-5 in game one, and 14-2 in five innings in game two.
A six-run seventh inning propelled Marist to a game one victory, and then the Red Foxes scored six in the first inning of game two. Senior Janna Korak homered three times on the day – once in game one, twice in game two.
Here is a closer look at each game:
Game One – Marist 9, Saint Peter's 5
Marist scored single runs in the second, third, and the sixth. In the second, an RBI single from sophomore Casey Page scored sophomore Madison Lee. Sophomore Brandi Coon's RBI triple brought home Korak in the third. Junior Kourtney Paul then belted a solo homer to lead off the sixth.
Saint Peter's answered with a five-run sixth as seven consecutive batters reached. Georgia Verrastro singled twice in the inning, and Sydney Ramsey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the go-ahead run.
However, Marist rallied with a six-run seventh. Korak led off the inning with a homer. With one out, junior Gabrielle Kelliher doubled. Coon followed with an RBI single, which tied the score at five apiece. Lee delivered a three-run homer – the first of her collegiate career – to put Marist in front at 8-5. Junior Miranda Perez's RBI single accounted for the final run of the inning.
Red-shirt senior Jessica Van Alphen (8-3) pitched the final 1.2 innings for the win. Senior Jayne Oberfdorf started and went four shutout innings. Page, Korak, and Coon finished with three hits apiece.
For Saint Peter's, Alyssa Ruiz (0-7), who started and pitched into the seventh, took the loss.
Game Two – Marist 14, Saint Peter's 2 (5 innings)
Marist started fast with a six-run first inning, which included a two-run homer by Korak. After Samantha Storms hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, a two-run double by Paul and RBI single by Lee gave Marist a 9-2 lead through two innings.
Marist expanded its lead to 10-2 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Page. In the fifth, the Red Foxes scored four more runs on a solo homer by Korak, RBI double by Paul, and two-run single by game. Marist prevailed in five innings by the mercy rule.
Marist had 15 hits in game two, led by Paul with four, and Korak and Lee with three apiece. Van Alphen (9-3) went the first four innings for the win, and sophomore Kallen Leeseberg closed the game out with a scoreless fifth. Ruiz (0-8) took the loss for Saint Peter's.
Marist is now 25-16 overall and 5-5 in the MAAC. Saint Peter's is 3-29 overall and 1-11 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday, when they head to Manhattan for a MAAC doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon.
