Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist softball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Army West Point at Gartland Field Thursday afternoon. Marist fell in the first contest by a final score of 6-4, and in game two they succumbed 2-1.

Junior Miranda Perez had a team-best four hits on the day. Here is a closer look at the two contests:

Game One – Army West Point 6, Marist 4

The Black Knights were able to threaten early, loading the bases in the second inning, but sophomore Kallen Leeseberg was able to bear down and not allow any runs. Army was able to break through in the third; however, plating five runs, three coming via a home run by Sam Hartman.

The Red Foxes did not get on the board until the six inning, scoring two thanks to a hit by sophomore Brandi Coon, and two ensuing fielding errors. Senior Janna Korak continued her torrid hitting streak with a two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh – her fifth home run in the last five games – which pulled the Red Foxes to within two. Marist was not able to complete the comeback; however, falling 6-4.

Sophomore Brooke Peterson was strong in her three innings of relief, not allowing any earned runs, striking out three, and not surrendering any walks. Leeseberg (4-6) went 2.1 innings in the contest for the Red Foxes and took the loss. Jessica Van Alphen pitched 1.2 innings in relief, striking out three, walking only one, and allowing a single run.

Caroline Smith (11-5) went the first six innings to secure the victory, and Renee Poirier got the final three outs for his fifth save.

Game Two – Army West Point 2, Marist 1

In game two, Army was able to strike early with a run in the first, despite not recording any hits. The Red Foxes were able to challenge in the opening innings, getting runners to third on multiple occasions, but they were not able to cash in. The Black Knights were able to tack on another run in the top of the fourth.

In the top of the sixth, Army was able to load the bases, but sophomore Megan Beiermeister was able to work herself out of the jam with a big strikeout. The Red Foxes were able to cut Army West Point's lead in half thanks to a sac fly from Coon in the bottom of the sixth. Marist was able to pressure in the bottom of the seventh, but they were unable to score, falling 2-1.

Beiermeister (8-5) tossed a complete game. She struck out four batters, walked three, and only allowed three hits. Poirier (13-6) went the distance on a five-hitter for the Black Knights.

The Red Foxes are now 26-19 on the season, while the Black Knights are 35-16 overall.

Marist will hit the road for a pair of doubleheaders as the Red Foxes are slated to face Niagara on Friday, and Canisius on Saturday. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 2 p.m., and Saturday's doubleheader is slated to start at noon
