POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Senior co-captain Amanda Amorosa was unanimously selected to the All-MAAC First Team. Senior Nastassia McGlothlin and sophomore Grace Doerfler were selected to the All-MAAC Second Team, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced at its water polo postseason awards ceremony on Friday evening.
In addition, Amorosa, McGlothlin and senior co-captain Jocelyn McQuade, along with junior Diana Carballo and sophomores Susan Cantoni, Doerfler, Ariana Singer, Katherine Tijerina, Hope Vickers and Caoimhe Whitebloom were named to the 2017 MAAC water polo All-Academic Team. The Red Foxes' 10 student athletes were the second most in the conference. To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must have completed two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
Amorosa has been an All-MAAC First Team selection each of her four years at Marist and was named the 2014 MAAC Rookie of the Year as well. This season, Amorosa led the team in shots (133), goals (61), assists (47), points (108) and is tied for first in games played (32). On March 26th, she broke the program's all-time career assists record with her 160th career assist and on April 5th, broke the program's all-time career goals record with her 274th career goal.
For McGlothlin and Doerfler, the All-MAAC Second Team selection is the first postseason award in both of their careers. This season, McGlothlin is tied for first in games played (32), is second in shots (121), points (64) and drawn kick outs (28) and is tied for second in goals (40). Doerfler is first on the team in drawn kick outs (36), is tied for first in games played (32) and is tied for second in goals (40).
The Red Foxes finished the 2017 regular season with an overall record of 19-13 (11-3 MAAC). The team's 8-10 non-conference record and its overall .594 winning percentage were both the best in a season since 2013. With its 11-3 conference record, Marist qualified for the MAAC Championship for the 14th consecutive year and earned the #2 seed overall. The Red Foxes will play the #3 seed Virginia Military Institute Keydets (22-6, 11-3 MAAC) in the semi-finals on Saturday (2 PM) in McCann Natatorium. The winner will then move on to play the winner of #1 Wagner vs #4 Iona (Sat 12 PM) in the Championship game on Sunday at 2 PM.
