BUFFALO, New York – The Marist softball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Canisius on Saturday. The Red Foxes won the first game 4-3, and prevailed 5-4 in eight innings in the second game.

Coupled with its sweep at Niagara on Friday, the Red Foxes completed their weekend in western New York at 4-0. Marist enters the final weekend of conference play at 10-6, and now stands at 30-19 overall. The Red Foxes are the first team in the conference to reach the 30-win plateau this season.

Junior Kourtney Paul led the Red Foxes by going 6-for-8 on the day. Here is a closer look at each game:

Game One – Marist 4, Canisius 3

The Red Foxes scored all of their runs in the first inning, and were aided by four Canisius errors. Sophomore Casey Page led off with a triple. Junior Miranda Perez then reached on an error on a bunt and stole second, with Page scoring on a throwing error on the steal. Senior Janna Korak then reached on an error, which brought home Perez. Two hitters later, sophomore Brandi Coon reached on an error, which allowed Korak to score. Coon then stole third, and scored on a single by Paul.

Canisius battled back as Lauren Castro hit a solo homer in the fourth and a two-run homer in the sixth to bring the Golden Griffins to within one. Sophomore Kallen Leeseberg then came on in relief to retire six straight batters for her third save of the season.

Jayne Oberdorf (6-3) struck out four in five-plus innings for the win. Perez and Paul led the Red Foxes with two hits apiece. Madi Weathers (6-10) pitched a complete game for Canisius. None of the four runs she allowed were earned.

Game Two – Marist 5, Canisius 4 (8 innings)

Canisius jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings. In the top of the fourth, an RBI single by junior Gabrielle Kelliher scored Coon, but the Golden Griffins answered with a run in their half of the inning to maintain their three-run lead.

The Red Foxes cut their deficit to one in the sixth. A single by sophomore Madison Lee brought home Paul, who had reached on a leadoff single. Lee then scored on a two-out error.

In the top of the seventh, Marist still trailed 4-3 with two outs and no one on base when Paul homered on a 3-1 pitch to tie the game. The Red Foxes scored the winning run in the top of the eighth, when senior Rebecca Freeman's single brought home Page.

The Red Foxes totaled 15 hits in the game. Paul went 4-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Megan Beiermeister (9-5) allowed just one run over the final 5.2 innings with five strikeouts for the win.

Weathers (6-11), who pitched the final three innings, took the loss for Canisius (18-31 overall, 6-10 MAAC). Lindsey Silfer led the Golden Griffins' offense by going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Marist returns home for its final six games of the regular season. The Red Foxes will have a non-conference doubleheader against Lafayette on Wednesday, followed by conference match-ups with Rider on Saturday and Monmouth on Sunday.
