Men's Soccer Looks to Remain Unbeaten at Hartford

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York — The Marist men's soccer team continues its six-game road trip as the Red Foxes travel to West Hartford, CT for a matchup with the Hartford Hawks on Saturday, Sept. 2nd at 7 PM.
 
Currently, the team stands at 2-0-0, having won its opening two games for the first time since 2014.
 

PREVIOUS OUTING:
 
The Red Foxes picked up a 2-1 win over the Hartwick Hawks on Tuesday night to open their road trip. The Hawks got on the board first just 16 seconds into the game with a penalty kick to go ahead 1-0. Marist had a chance to tie with their own penalty kick in the 19th minute, but the shot was saved to keep the score 1-0 Hartwick. The Red Foxes equalized just 14 seconds into the second half when sophomore Samad Bounthong found junior co-captain Simon Lund-Jorgensen who dribbled to the edge of the box and curled a shot into the top right corner to tie the game at 1-1. Just over 20 minutes later, freshman Allen Gavilanes found space down the right sideline, cut into the box, avoided a tackle and passed the ball to Bruce Jeter who was all alone in the middle and tapped it in for the 2-1 lead and eventual game winner.
 
SCOUTING HARTFORD:
 
Hartford is coming off a 1-1 tie with Saint Joseph's on Tuesday night. Rasmus Karlsson scored the team's lone goal with an assist by Aitor Elena. Hartford only had two shots on goal the whole game, while goalie Jimmy Slayton had four saves.
 
The Hawks finished 2016 at 9-10-3 and made it all the way to the American East Championship game but fell to Albany 1-0.
 
RANKINGS:
 
Marist is currently ranked #2 in the in the United Soccer Coaches Association Division 1 Northeast Region Poll that was released on August 29th. The Red Foxes appeared in the organization's Northeast Region Poll from the second week on in 2016, coming in as high as #2 on Sept. 27. The group was formerly known as the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America and changed its name earlier this month.
 
MAAC AWARDS:
 
David Nkansah-Siriboe was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer Offensive Player of the Week for his two goal performance against the Great Danes.
 
FIRST YEAR SUCCESS:
 
Freshman Allen Gavilanes has had a big start to his collegiate career, leading the team with five points and has also factored in four of Marist's five total goals scored so far this season. He has one goal, three assists and two shots on goal with a .500 shots on goal percentage through two games.
 
BETTER THAN LAST YEAR:
 
David Nkansah-Siriboe currently leads the team with two goals. In two games this year, he has already doubled his goal tally from 2016 (1 goal in 16 games), has three shots on goal to equal his mark from last season and has just one fewer total shots with six as he had in 2016 when he finished with seven.

NEXT UP:
 
Following the matchup with the Hawks, Marist will remain on the road as they travel to Washington, D.C. for a game against the American University Eagles on Thursday, Sept. 7th (4 PM).
 
After two games, the Eagles stand at 0-2 following 2-0 and 3-0 losses to the Georgetown Hoyas and George Mason Patriots respectively.
 
American is coming off an 11-5-5 season in 2016, during which they made it to the Patriot League Championship but lost to the Colgate Red Raiders 5-4 in penalty kicks.
