PRINCETON, New Jersey -- The #25 Marist water polo team picked up a 7-6 win over the Bucknell University Bison, before falling to the George Washington Colonials 15-11 at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday.
With the results, the Red Foxes now stand at 2-8 overall on the season.
SUMMARY VS BUCKNELL:
Marist opened the scoring with four goals in the opening period by junior co-captain
Katherine Tijerina (2), sophomore Justin Castro and sophomore
Anais Mathes to take the 4-0 lead after the first eight minutes.
Junior
Grace Doerfler found the back of the net with 1:42 left in the second quarter, before the Bison got on the board with a goal at the 7:55 mark of the second period and after the first half it was 5-1 in favor of the Red Foxes.
Bucknell and Marist traded goals to open the second half with Doerfler and Mathes scoring for Marist, before the Bison scored back-to-back goals with 1:50 and 1:06 left in the third quarter to climb within two at 7-5 after three periods.
With 3:49 left in the game, Bucknell trimmed the deficit to one with a goal, however, the Red Fox defense stood tall and held the Bison scoreless for the remainder of the game to emerge victorious 7-6.
SUMMARY VS GEORGE WASHINGTON:
After the Colonials opened the scoring with a goal just 47 seconds into the game, junior
Susan Cantoni evened the score for Marist at 1-1. Less than one minute later, senior co-captain
Diana Carballo gave the Red Foxes the lead of an assist from Cantoni, however, George Washington tied things up a little more than a minute later. After the Colonials regained the lead at the 3:10 mark of the opening period, back-to-back goals by Mathes and Tijerina gave Marist a 4-3 lead after one.
George Washington scored five unanswered goals in the second quarter and after one half of play the score was 8-4 in favor of George Washington.
Twenty seconds into the third quarter, the Colonials extended their lead to 9-4 but back-to-back goals by Carballo and Mathes trimmed the deficit to 9-6 with 7:16 left to play. George Washington answered with consecutive goals to regain the five goal lead at 11-6, before the Red Foxes answered with back-to-back-to-back goals by Tijerina, freshman
Lauren Smith and Mathes to bring the score to 11-9 heading into the final quarter.
Two straight Colonial goals gave George Washington a 13-9 lead with 5:52 left in the game, before Cantoni answered with a goal to trim the deficit back to three. However, the Colonials found the back of the net two more times, while Marist scored just once and when time expired it was the George Washington that was victorious 15-11.
