POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist water polo team picked up a 6-3 win over the Brown Bears and were tied with the #13 Hartwick Hawks 2-2 at the end of the first quarter but fell 17-9 at the Marist Invitational on Sunday.
With the results, the Red Foxes now stand at 3-9 on the season.
SUMMARY VS BROWN:
Marist opened the scoring just 1:39 into the game on their first man advantage opportunity when junior co-captain
Katherine Tijerina found sophomore
Anais Mathes at the point who fired it home for the 1-0. After the goal, both team's defenses stepped up keeping the score 1-0 in favor of the Red Foxes through the remainder of the opening quarter.
At the 6:12 mark of the second period, the Bears evened the score with a power play goal but just 19 seconds later, Marist regained the lead when senior co-captain
Diana Carballo found junior
Ariana Singer at the right post who put it home for the 2-1 lead. As it was in the first quarter, the remainder of the second period was all defense and the two teams entered the half with the Red Foxes holding the one goal lead.
The second half opened with back-to-back-to-back goals by Marist with sophomore
Justine Castro on the powerplay, Carballo and Castro again finding the back of the net to take a 5-1 lead with 4:10 left in the third quarter. Brown answered with consecutive goals with four minutes left in the third and just over two minutes into the fourth quarter to bring the score to 5-3 but the Red Foxes answered with a goal by Tijerina on the fast break off an assist from senior
Jessica Hermosillo and held on for the 6-3 win.
KEY STATS VS BROWN:
- Both teams finished with 24 shots
- Both teams went 2-for-5 on the man advantage
- Marist shot .250 while the Bears shot .125
GAME NOTES:
- Hermosillo notched her fourth straight game with seven or more saves (7) and finished with a season best .700 save percentage
- Mathes' goal marked her seventh straight game this season with a goal
- Castro's two goals marked a season high in 11 games played and was her third straight game with at least one goal
- Carballo's three assists and four points marked a season high and her three steals tied a season high
SUMMARY VS #13 HARTWICK:
Hartwick opened the scoring with back-to-back goals on the powerplay to take a 2-0 lead with 5:30 left in the quarter. The Red Foxes answered with goals by Mathes on the powerplay and Doerfler to tie things up with 3:14 left in the period.
With the score tied at 2-2 to start the second period, the Hawks went on a 7-0 run over the first seven plus minutes of the quarter to take a 9-2 lead. Carballo answered with a goal off a 5 meter penalty shot with 32 seconds left in the half but Hartwick again found the back of the net with 21 seconds left and entered the half with the 10-3 lead.
Both teams traded goals in the third period, with Doerfler and sophomore
Lexi Puhl finding the back of the net for Marist and with eight minutes left in the game it was 12-5 Hawks.
The final quarter saw more back-and-forth even action with Hartwick scoring five goals and the Red Foxes scoring four from Castro, freshman
Katelin Harris (her first career goal), freshman
Lauren Smith and junior
Caoimhe Whitebloom and when the final buzzer sounded the Hawks emerged with the 17-9 win.

- The Hawks finished 6-for-8 on the powerplay, while the Red Foxes finished 3-for-7
GAME NOTES:
- Carballo's three assists marks the second straight game she has finished with three helpers
- Harris' goal was her first collegiate goal
