NEW ROCHELLE, New York – The Marist water polo team picked up its fifth straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win with a 12-8 victory vs the Virginia Military Keydets but fell to the #18 Wagner Seahawks 13-6 at Iona College on Saturday.
SUMMARY VS VMI:
The Red Foxes opened the scoring 1:15 into the game when senior co-captain
Diana Carballo found the back of the net off an assist from junior co-captain
Katherine Tijerina. Just over two minutes later, Tijerina put Marist up 2-0 and less than a minute later, sophomore
Anais Mathes gave the Red Foxes a three goal lead with 3:49 left in the opening quarter. The Keydets got on the board roughly 10 seconds after Mathes' goal, before Carballo answered with her second about a minute later. VMI then found the back of the net on the powerplay with less than a minute left to close out the scoring in the first with the score 4-2 in favor of the Red Foxes.
Tijerina gave Marist a three goal lead just under two minutes into the second quarter. Both teams battled defensively for the next four minutes or so. The Keydets trimmed the score to 5-3 with 1:31 left in the half but sophomore
Justine Castro found the back of the net with 34 seconds left to send both teams into the half with the Red Foxes holding a 6-3 lead.
For the second straight quarter, Tijerina opened the scoring in the third with a goal just over a minute in. A VMI powerplay goal at 5:18 trimmed the deficit back to three but junior
Grace Doerfler gave Marist the 8-4 lead just over a minute later. Back-to-back goals by the Keydets brought VMI to within two at 8-6 with 2:54 left in the third period but the Red Foxes answered with back-to-back goals by Carballo and Castro to give Marist a 10-6 lead with one quarter remaining.
Junior
Ariana Singer made it a game high five goal lead for the Red Foxes with a goal just over two minutes into the final period, before VMI answered roughly two minutes later trim the deficit back to four. Sophomore
Carolyn Gauvin gave Marist a 12-7 lead with 2:59 left which remained the score until the Keydets answered with 11 seconds remaining in the game. However, not enough time was left for VMI to get any closer and the Red Foxes emerged victorious 12-8.

SUMMARY VS #18 Wagner:
The Seahawks opened the scoring with back-to-back-to-back goals in the opening 2:18 of the game and held Marist scoreless for the 3-0 lead after one quarter.
Wagner extended the lead to 4-0 just 23 seconds into the second, before the Red Foxes got on the board with a goal by Mathes roughly 30 seconds later. Back-to-back goals by the Seahawks brought the score to 6-1 with 5:03 left in the first half but freshman
Lauren Smith trimmed the deficit to four, picking up her first score with 2:52 left. Wagner answered with a goal roughly 30 seconds later but back-to-back goals by Castro and Carballo trimmed the deficit to 7-4 after two quarters.
For a third straight period, the Seahawks opened the scoring in the third, before Tijerina answered, finding the back of the net just over a minute later. However, three straight unanswered Wagner goals in the final 1:48 gave the Seahawks the 11-5 lead with eight minutes remaining.
Castro brought Marist to within five with a goal 1:05 into the fourth but Wagner held the Red Foxes scoreless for the remainder of the game and tacked on two more goals to pick up the 13-6 win.
