The Marist women's volleyball team lost to Providence this evening in a hard-fought 3-2 match. Despite a solid Marist comeback, the Friars managed to turn up the offensive pressure in game five to seal the victory. Marist freshman Christy Lukes (Mesa, AZ) had a career night, with new highs of 12 kills and seven blocks (two solo, five assisted), while hitting a tremendous .632 percent.
The Friars came out strong in game one, taking advantage of Marist's offensive struggles to win 30-20. Marist battled back to take game two, 36-34, but would fall in game three 30-24. The Red Foxes hit an impressive .429 as a team to fight back for the 30-21 victory in game four; however the Friars had some fight left in them as they took game five, 15-9 for the win.
Sophomores Jaime Kenworthy (Aston, PA) and Stefanie Miksch (Austin, TX) each recorded a double-double in the losing effort. Kenworthy notched 15 kills and 11 digs along with two assisted blocks for her fourth double-double in the Red Foxes' last six games. Miksch led Marist with 16 kills and 10 digs while classmate Sally Hanson (Guerneville, CA) also recorded 16 kills along with three service aces and three assisted blocks. Junior libero Katie Lux (Wantagh, NY) led the defense with 20 digs while classmate Meghan Cochrane (Placentia, CA) posted a new career-high 59 assists while chipping in 12 digs and six kills.
The Friars had three players with double-digit kills, including Ayana Cadres with 25 and Kerry Schulz with 22.
The Red Foxes, now 9-6 on the season, will take on the Crimson of Harvard tomorrow, Saturday Oct. 2 at 1:00 p.m. in their second match of the weekend.
