Sarah Hutton's volleyball squad dropped two hard-fought matches on the first day of the Red Fox Classic. The Red Foxes fell in three games to a solid Stonybrook squad before dropping a five game contest to Dartmouth in the nightcap. Junior Sally Hanson (Guerneville, Calif.) hit a combined .475 for the day while Jaime Kenworthy (Aston, Pa.) tallied a double-double against the Big Green.
Marist came out strong in game one against Stonybrook, taking a disappointing 30-28 loss. Stonybrook proved a formidable opponent, winning both games two and three, 30-22. Marist was buoyed by the hard-hitting Hanson, who tallied eight kills on .667 hitting with no errors. Sophomore middle blocker Christy Lukes (Mesa, Ariz.) was impressive, posting five blocks, including three solo, to go along with nine kills. Senior libero Katie Lux (Wantagh, N.Y.) snagged 19 digs to boost the Red Foxes' defense.
Lukes and Hanson continued their solid offense against Dartmouth, hitting .500 (12 kills) and .393 (15 kills), respectively. They each added four blocks while Hanson had three aces. Marist won game one of the match 30-26, before Dartmouth came back to take game two 30-25. Kenworthy had eight kills in game three to boost Marist to a 30-25 victory before the Big Green came back to win game four, 30-27. Dartmouth won the decisive game, 15-12.
Kenworthy was solid for Marist all day, posting a double-double with a team high 24 kills and 10 digs against Dartmouth to go along with nine kills versus the Seawolves. Senior setter Meghan Cochrane (Placentia, Calif.) combined for 94 assists, seven service aces (five against Dartmouth) and eight kills.
The Red Fox Classic continues tomorrow morning when Dartmouth takes on Lafayette at 10:00 a.m. The Red Foxes play at 12:00 p.m. when they face Lafayette.
