The Marist volleyball team split a pair of matches on day one of the Marist Invitational, defeating Providence and falling to Princeton. Marist's middle blockers led the attack with junior Sally Hanson (Guerneville, Calif.) hitting a whopping .517 with 31 kills and sophomore Christy Lukes recording 19. The two combined for 20 blocks total on the day.
In their first match of the day, the Red Foxes took a 3-1 win over Providence on the strength of double-digit kills from Hanson, Kim McEathron (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) and Stephanie Miksch (Austin, Texas). Marist took game one, 30-26, then swiftly won game two, 30-15. Providence rebounded to earn a 30-20 victory in game three before Marist slammed the door with a 30-13 win in game four.
Hanson continued her solid play with 15 kills on .452 hitting, while McEathron had a double-double on 12 kills and 11 digs. Miksch added 10 kills and eight digs while Christy Lukes (Mesa, Ariz.) picked up nine, including four in game four.
Hanson led the Marist blocking efforts with two solo and three assisted while classmate Jackie Poston (Huntingtown, Md.) had six block assists as well as five big service aces. Lukes tallied one solo block and four block assists.
Marist came out strong against Princeton, winning game one 30-27 on the strength of six kills from Hanson. The Tigers rallied to win the next three games, but all by close margins, 30-26, 30-25, 30-24. Marist had four players with double-digit kills including Hanson (16), Miksch (13), Jaime Kenworthy (Aston, Pa.) (11) and Lukes (10).
Three Red Foxes had double-digit digs including Katie Lux (Wantagh, N.Y.) (21), McEathron (11) and freshman Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) (10). Lukes had six total blocks including four solo and Hanson had three solo blocks and one assisted.
Senior setter Meghan Cochrane (Placentia, Calif.) totaled 93 assists on the day.
Marist is now 3-10 on the season. The Red Foxes return to action with a 10:00 a.m. match against Fairleigh Dickinson tomorrow.
