Final Stats
HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Marist volleyball team wrapped up play in the High Point University Classic with a 3-0 loss to the host High Point Panthers on Saturday night. Following the match, sophomore Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.) was named to the All-Tournament Team. In four matches this weekend, Foss led the Red Foxes with 3.93 kills per set and was second in digs with 2.36 per set.
Marist (2-7) fell victim to 27 attack errors and hit only .018 in losing to High Point 25-19, 25-18, 25-19. Foss led the Red Foxes with 10 kills and also had 10 digs for a double-double. Freshman Cassie Campbell (Canton, Ohio) had a strong match and set a career-high with six kills, hitting .211. Sophomore libero Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) led all players with 17 digs.
High Point (5-2) took hold of the first set at the outset, jumping out to a 12-6 lead with balanced hitting and strong blocking from Kristina Taylor and Lindsay Raus. Marist cut the lead to five with a kill from Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas), but the Panthers responded with a 6-0 run highlighted by a pair of kills from Stephanie Wallin, to take a 19-7 lead. Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) answered with a kill to end the run and make the score 19-8. The Red Foxes then ran off five straight points off the serve of Campbell to get within six. This was as close as Marist got in the first set. Their .024 hitting percentage got the best of them and High Point took the set 25-19.
The Red Foxes and Panthers traded points early in the second set, playing to a 7-7 tie. High Point took control from there, going on an 8-0 run off the serve of Audie Gonzalez to take a 15-7 lead. Marist got within five at 18-13 behind consecutive errors from Ashley Mellott. Just as in the first set, the Red Foxes could not put up a consistent attack. Marist hit -.024 in the second and fell 25-18. High Point took the momentum from winning the first two sets and hit a match-high .235 in the third, holding Marist to a .067 hitting percentage and won the set 25-19.
Mellott led High Point with 13 kills and hit .345. Gonzalez added 11 kills and had 12 digs for a double-double. Setter Kristina Taylor had a match-high 33 assists, while libero Julie Hershkowitz led the Panthers with 16 digs. As a team, High Point hit .171 and held a 51-48 advantage in digs, as well as a 5-4 block advantage.
Marist will participate in the Crosstown Tournament next weekend at Lafayette and Lehigh. The Red Foxes will take on Lafayette on Friday at 7 p.m.
