POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team completed its weekend sweep of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponents after defeating Siena, 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 13-25, 25-22) on Sunday afternoon at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes received a match-high 13 kills by freshman Grace Hill (Portage, Mich.) while sophomore Katie Estes (Saugus, Calif.) and freshman Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) each finished with 14 digs to lead Marist.
Marist (10-10, 5-3 MAAC) won the first two sets of the match behind six kills from Hill and five kills by senior Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas). The Red Foxes took their largest lead of the first set, 22-18, on a kill by Hill, but Siena mounted a comeback that brought the Saints to within one point of Marist, 22-21. Marist closed out the 25-22 first set victory on a kill by Brady and two kills by senior Allie Burke (Alpharetta, Ga.).
The second set featured 11 ties, with both teams trading points for most of the game. With the game tied 16-16, Marist used a 5-1 run to put some distance between itself and Siena. The Saints, however, would trim Marist's lead to one point, 22-21, late in the set, but three Saints' attack errors coupled with a kill by Hill gave Marist the 25-23 second set victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Siena (4-13, 3-5 MAAC) came out strong to start the third set as it looked to avoid being swept. The Saints took a commanding ten-point lead over Marist, 20-10, as they went on to claim the third set, 25-13.
In the fourth set, Marist took an early 3-0 lead, but saw Siena tie up the set at 5-5. From there, Marist responded with a 6-0 run on three Siena attack errors and two kills by Burke to take an 11-5 lead. The Red Foxes held a 19-11 lead in the set, but Siena closed to within two points, 24-22, before a kill by Burke sealed the 3-1 victory for Marist.
As a team, Marist totaled nine blocks in the match while Siena finished with eight.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 16 when they travel to Riverdale, N.Y. to take on Manhattan at 2 p.m.
