Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

FAIRFIELD, CONN. - With the tying run at third base, the Marist softball team could not push its fifth run of the day across as it suffered a 5-4 loss to Fairfield in game one of a doubleheader. The Red Foxes dropped the second game of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) twinbill 9-1 in five innings. Sophomore Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) was one of four Marist players who had two hits in a single game on Saturday. Her two hits in game one were both doubles.

Junior Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) tallied a double as she went a combined 3-for-7 on the day. Sophomore Brittany English (Wilton, Conn.) went 2-for-2 at the plate in game one, while senior Alanna Woody (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI in game two. Freshman Christina Lausch (Lancaster, Pa.) drew four walks in game one and scored a run.

In game one of the twinbill, Fairfield (18-14, 4-0 MAAC) put up two runs each of the second and third innings to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Allie Ritacco and Laura Carta each scored runs in the second on a two-RBI single by Allie Wigand. Dani Griswold led off the third with a solo home run and Meghan Borst scored on a Ritacco single. Fairfield added what would prove to be the game-winning run in the fourth as Borst scored Wigand.

The Red Foxes got on the board in the top of the sixth inning with two runs. DiVirgilio scored Lausch with an RBI double to left center field. She would later come around to score on a Corriss infield hit. In that sixth inning, Marist sent eight batters to the plate against the Stags starting pitcher Sarah Minice.

With the score 5-2, and Marist (4-23, 0-4 MAAC) in it is final trip to the plate in game one, Malloy led the seventh inning off with a base hit through the left side. Lausch walked and DiVirgilio capped a stretch of three straight base runners to get on with an RBI double to center field. She drove in Malloy, and Lausch got to third on the play. Junior McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.) notched an RBI single as Lausch scored to cut the lead to one, at 5-4.

One batter later, sophomore Alyxandra Ponce (Columbia, Md.) popped into a double play on a bunt attempt to end the game.

In the second game of the day, the Stags scored all nine of their runs in the final three innings. After it took a 1-0 lead in the third, Fairfield scored five runs in the fourth and three in the third to take the game in five innings.

Trailing, 1-0 in the top of the fourth, Woody drove in Lindsay Durant (Martinsville, N.J.) to tie the score at one a piece with a base hit.

Freshman Emily Osterhaus (Suwanee, Ga.) and sophomore Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) suffered losses in games one and two respectively. Osterhaus struck out four batters and set down the side in order in the sixth inning.

Marist will return to action on Sunday, April 18 as they travel to Iona for a MAAC doubleheader with the Gaels. The first pitch of the games is scheduled for 1 p.m.
