POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - In a make-up game that was originally postponed on April 25 due to rain in the Hudson River Valley, the Marist softball team dropped a pair of games to Manhattan in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action on Thursday at the Softball Park at Gartland Field. The Red Foxes forced the Lady Jaspers into extra innings in game one but fell short by a 2-1 margin in nine innings, while Manhattan ran away with game two, 6-1.
Sophomore Ashley Corriss (Sayville, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 in game one out of the leadoff spot. Classmates Megan Lamoureux (Woonsocket, R.I.) and Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) each posted two hits in game two. Lamoureux scored Marist's lone run in the fourth inning.
Manhattan (24-20-1, 8-6 MAAC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Kristina Walraven hit a lead-off home run to left center field. Following the home run, Marist (8-33, 2-10 MAAC) starter Emily Osterhaus (Suwanee, Ga.) threw eight shutout innings in the circle.
The Red Foxes tied the score at one apiece on a Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) RBI single through the middle that scored Corriss.
In the eighth inning Osterhaus got herself out of a bases loaded jam with one out. She got Nicole Michel to line out to third baseman McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.). Campbell dove at the third base bag to double up Walraven and end the inning.
Manhattan scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth with two outs as Amanda Babcock crossed the plate with two outs on a ground ball in the infield.
Osterhaus finished the game with six strikeouts in nine innings pitched. She scattered eight hits in her complete game loss and is now 2-11 this season.
In the second game, Manhattan got on the board first in the top of the third. Walraven was driven in on an RBI line drive base hit by Monica Evangelista. Marist leveled the score at 1-1 when Lamoureux scored in the bottom of the fourth.
Jaci Rahey put the Lady Jaspers in front for good with a three-run home run to right center field in the top of the fifth. Manhattan tacked on two runs in the sixth to arrive at the 6-1 final score.
Freshman Danielle Koltz (Chenango Bridge, N.Y.) was charged with the loss in game two. She gave up four runs, three earned and struck out six in 4.1 innings pitched.
Marist will return to the diamond on Saturday, May 8 when it hosts Canisius in a MAAC doubleheader. First pitch at the Softball Park at Gartland Field is scheduled for noon.
