KINGSTON, R.I. - The Marist volleyball team lost to New Hampshire 3-1 (25-18, 18-25, 26-28, 25-27) in its second match of the Art Carmichael URI Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Red Foxes received a match-high 20 kills by freshman Grace Hill (Portage, Mich.), but could not pull out the victory.

Marist (5-6) claimed the first set behind three kills each from senior Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) and Estes. A kill by Hill gave the Red Foxes a 13-9 lead, but New Hampshire would mount a comeback and tie up the set at 14-14. A kill by sophomore Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) was followed by two aces from Hill, giving Marist an 18-14 lead. The Red Foxes would close out the set on a kill and ace by Estes and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

New Hampshire (3-5) found itself trailing 4-1 to start the second set, but managed to retake the lead, 7-6, on a Jessie Schnepp service ace. The Wildcats fended off several Marist rallies, allowing the Red Foxes to come within one point late in the set, 17-16, but closed out the set with an 8-1 run to even up the match at 1-1.

The third set featured 15 tie scores and six lead changes as both teams exchanged points throughout much of the game. The Wildcats held a 23-20 lead over the Red Foxes, but two errors followed by a kill from Hill evened up the set at 23-23. The set was tied 26-26 when a Taylor Dressing kill and a Morgan Thatcher ace gave the Wildcats the third set victory and a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set was another closely contested battle, with 12 ties throughout the game. Down 24-23 and facing match point, a kill by Hill evened up the set at 24-24. A Thatcher kill followed by a kill from Schmid evened up the set at 25-25, but two Marist errors gave the Wildcats a 27-25 fourth set victory.

Senior Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) and sophomore Katie Estes (Saugus, Calif.) led the Red Foxes with 10 digs apiece in the match. Schmid finished with nine kills for Marist while Lauren Laquerre and Dressing combined for 30 kills to lead New Hampshire.

The Red Foxes will return to action Saturday at 3 p.m. when they face tournament host Rhode Island.
