POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.
- The Red Foxes earned an important 3-0 victory over Niagara, the second place
team in the MAAC with a dominate 90 minutes of play Friday night at Tenney
Stadium at Leonidoff Field. In a battle of the top two conference teams, Marist
broke away in the second half with three goals, including two by sophomore
Samantha Panzner (Livingston, N.J.). Sophomore Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.)
also netted a goal for the Red Foxes, who earned their eleventh win of the
season, which ties the 2007 team for the most wins in program history.
The play in the first half had an overwhelming Marist
feel to it is as the Red Foxes took 16 shots versus zero for Niagara.
Unfortunately for the Red Foxes none of the attempts found the back of the net.
Niagara's goalkeeper Gabrielle Wilson played a large role in that result as she
corralled all eight of the shots that were on target.
Marist's best two scoring opportunities were a Jackie
Frey (Monroe, N.Y.) shot in the 14th minute and a Kathryn Hannis (Bloomsbury,
N.J.) header in the 26th. Frey's attempt came off of a series of
passes that started with an Amanda Epstein (Jericho, N.Y.) cross that Panzner
backheeled to the junior forward who was had stopped from close in by Wilson,
while Hannis' shot was the result of a Guiney corner kick.
After 45 minutes the score was 0-0, as the Purple Eagles
were able to survive the Red Fox onslaught.
Niagara's luck ran out shortly into the second half as
Panzner notched her first goal of the season off of a Guiney assist at 47:40.
With the assist, Guiney had recorded a point for her fifth consecutive game.
Marist kept the pressure up as they were unwilling to sit
comfortably on their one goal lead. Over the next 13 minutes they took the next
five shots before Niagara finally tallied their first shot of the game on a
Breanna Catipovic attempt at 63:26.
The Purple Eagles' leading scorer's first shot towards
net was blocked from the side by a hard-charging Chelsea Botta (East
Longmeadow, Mass.), Catipovic then recovered the rebound and fired a shot high.
Outside of that series of shots, Niagara spent the
majority of their time chasing and defending the Red Foxes on offense in the
second half. Marist scored their second goal of the game at 83:48 when Epstein
played a ball in from the right wing to Frey, who put a lead pass in to Guiney,
who beat Wilson one on one.
Panzner completed the scoring at 88:10 as she took a ball
that was played from Hannis into Epstein and put a shot underneath the diving Niagara
goalkeeper off the far post. This goal marked Panzner's second career two-goal
game, the first being on Oct. 1, 2010 at Saint Peter's. The tally also helped
Epstein record her first ever multi-assist game.
When the scoreboard showed all zeros the final score was
3-0 in favor of the Red Foxes, who were able to extend their MAAC lead to two
full games with their 6-1 league mark.
The evening's contest saw the second consecutive shutout
posted by Marist's defense and sixth win in six games at home.
Goalkeeper Caitlin Landsman (Burke, Va.) earned the win
and shutout as she improved to 6-1 on the season with four clean sheets.
For the game, the Red Foxes outshot the Purple Eagles
29-4 and 13-0 in the shots on net category.
The Red Foxes will next be in action on Sunday, Oct. 23
when they host third-place Cansius in a 1 p.m. matchup.
Prior to the contest, the team's three seniors:
Kathryn Hannis,
Mariah Downey and
Amanda Cardona will be recognized in a Senior
Day ceremony.
