POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.
- On Senior Day, a three hour delay in the time of the kickoff would not hold back
the Red Foxes' drive for a first round bye in the MAAC Tournament. Fans who
braved the elements on Sunday afternoon would have seen what head coach Matt
Viggiano called "most complete game of the season." Marist closed out their
regular season with a dominate 3-0 win over Loyola and consequently the fifth
seed. Seniors Lucas Szabo (Bethesda, Md.), Tim Garger (Garden City, N.Y.) and
junior Anthony Rozmus (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) notched the goals for the Red
Foxes (8-6-4, 4-4-1 MAAC).
Energized after ceremonies to recognize seniors Troy
Confessore (Kendall Park, N.J.), Alex George (Southold, N.Y.), Fred Osborne
(Trumbull, Conn.), Krystian Witkowski (Rochester, N.Y.), Garger and Szabo, the
Red Foxes shut down a dangerous Loyola squad, who came into the game averaging
1.5 goals per game, third best in the MAAC.
The initial 25 minutes consisted of back and forth play,
in which the Red Foxes held a slight lead in possession. Neither team mounted
much of an offensive threat and Marist registered the only two shots.
The pace picked up down the stretch of the first half. In
a three minute span from 27th to 30th minute, Marist put
four shots towards net, two of which were blocked by Loyola defenders. The
Greyhounds had a chance to respond in the 37th minute as Geaton
Caltabiano had his shot on goal smothered from close in by a charging Marist
goalkeeper Steve Skonieczny (LaGrangeville, N.Y.).
The Red Foxes finally broke through with under two
minutes to go in the half. Off of a short, quick Witkowski corner kick, Rozmus received
the ball and threaded a perfectly placed pass through Loyola's defense in the
box to the waiting Szabo, who one-timed a shot into the back of the net.
At the half, Marist held advantages on the scoreboard, in
shots (8-3) and corner kicks (6-2).
Coming out in the second 45, the Red Foxes held over the
momentum that they had built in the first half as they complete shut down all
chances Loyola had to put together sustained offensive possessions.
They were able to extend their lead to 2-0 on just their
second shot on goal of the game at 66:44. Witkowski was the facilitator on this
tally as well, as he dribbled into the box and slide a pass across the six yard
line where he found Garger for the easy put in. This goal was the second of
Garger's career and first since 2008.
Loyola attempted to put the pressure on the Red Foxes with
three corner kick opportunities during a 71 second span from 72:52 to 74:03,
but we only able to come up with one shot that flew high and away from danger.
Marist closed their scoring with a Rozmus marker at
86:03. The junior midfielder fired in his first goal of the season after corralling
a Szabo shot that rang off the post from around 15 yards out. In a rare occurrence,
this third goal was scored on the team's third and final shot on goal of the
game.
The defensive backfield of Osborne, sophomores Gerry Ceja
(Port Chester, N.Y.) and Tony Carreras (Valley Stream, N.Y.), and freshmen Matt
Wendelken (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Dylan Lee (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) finished
the game out strong and secured the clean sheet. When the final whistle blew,
the Red Foxes were victorious over Loyola for the first time since the 2005
MAAC Semifinals.
Skonieczny earned his seventh shutout of the season and
stopped the only shot he faced.
As a team Marist outshot Loyola 13-5, with a 3-1
advantage in shots on goal.
Post-game Viggiano remarked that he "would like to thank
the seniors. These six athletes made up my first class that I completely
recruited. I'm so happy for them to finally get their first win over Loyola.
Overall, this was our most complete game of the season, all of our parts
clicked today. Earning two wins this
weekend was a great way to complete the regular season and an even better way
to head down to the MAAC Championships at Disney."
The Red Foxes begin their quest for a MAAC Championship
on Friday, Nov. 4 when they face off with the fourth-seeded Niagara Purple
Eagles at 1:30 p.m at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Lake Buena Vista,
Fla. Live cut-ins of the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
