POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.
- The Red Foxes continued their fast start in conference play as they scored
four goals versus a MAAC opponent for the third time in four games when they
defeated Manhattan by a score of 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. Junior Jackie Frey
(Monroe, N.Y.) led a group of four Red Foxes, who tallied goals versus the
Jaspers; freshman Amanda Epstein (Jericho, N.Y.), sophomore Rycke Guiney
(Naperville, Ill.) and Jaclynn Sabia (Wayne, N.J.) also scored.
Marist got on the board 63 seconds after the opening
whistle when Frey corralled a deflected pass by Guiney, dribbled into the
six-yard box and got a shot off to beat Manhattan's goalkeeper Kara Davis high
and over her left shoulder. The 1:03 mark was the fastest goal scored by a Red
Fox this year surpassing Epstein's goal versus Lehigh which was scored 1:40
into the game. It also was the team's third goal scored within the first two
minutes following an opening kickoff this season.
The Red Foxes weren't ready to finish their scoring at
one goal as the team held possession in Manhattan's end consistently over the
next five minutes. Three shots on goal by junior Chelsea Botta (East
Longmeadow, Mass.), senior Kathryn Hannis (Bloomsbury, N.J.) and Epstein tested
Davis.
The Jaspers followed with a span of play where they were
able to get off a few sustain offensive drives. Their best opportunity was a
two-on-one involving Martine Diamond and Devon Lutz, who worked a quick give
and go that saw Diamond unleash a shot on Andrea Wicks (East Northport, N.Y.)
from close range as the Marist goalkeeper closed in on the Manhattan forward.
Marist increased their lead to two goals off of an
Epstein goal at 15:51. The freshman notched her team-high seventh goal of the
season on a one-timer shot from 10 yards out after receiving a pass from Botta,
who had navigated the Manhattan defense along the left wing from near midfield.
Davis continued getting peppered by shots from the Marist
offense as they took nine shots, including two on goal and two blocked over the
next 15 minutes. Her strong play in net allowed the Jaspers to stay close and
eventually bring the Manhattan deficit to 2-1 when Lutz took a Jordan Luithle
pass and fired a shot past Wicks to the keeper's left at 33:47.
The half closed out with a scoreless 11:13, but it wasn't
without fireworks as junior Melanie Rigo (Huntington, N.Y.) took a perfectly
placed pass by Sabia and blasted a shot on goal from 20 yards that required a
diving save by Davis.
At halftime, the scoreboard was the lone place where the
teams were competitive as the Red Foxes held a 21-5 advantage in shots and a
10-2 margin in shots on goals. From the standpoint of time of possession Marist
controlled the ball significantly more, as well in the first half.
The second 45 begin in similar fashion to the first as the
Red Foxes came out with their offense working well. Off of some passing inside
the 18-yard box, Marist was awarded a penalty kick following a Manhattan hand
ball. Guiney converted the kick with a shot to Davis' left at 47:53.
Two minutes later, the team almost notched their fourth
goal as Guiney took a shot that rang off the crossbar and Hannis followed up
with a header attempt on the rebound that was denied by a leaping Davis.
Play slowed down over the next 20 minutes and saw the
teams play the ball from end to end without any shots on goal. Coming off the
bench, Sabia stepped on the field and almost immediately broke up the monotonous
action. Less than four minutes after entering, the junior forward took
possession of the ball and rocketed a shot from 25 yards out that found its way
into the upper right 90 at 73:59. With that goal, Sabia moved into sole
possession of seventh place on Marist's all-time goal scoring list.
The game closed out with a scoreless 16:01 of play. After
90 minutes of action, the Red Foxes were victorious for their fourth time in
four MAAC matchups and eight of their last nine total contests. Combined with
losses by Canisius and Niagara, Marist controls first place in the MAAC by
themselves.
For the game, the Red Foxes outshot Manhattan 28-8, with
a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal. Wicks made two saves to improve her record
to 5-1, while Davis stopped 10 shots in a losing effort.
The Red Foxes will next be in action on Friday, Oct. 14
when they travel to Lawrenceville, N.J. to take on Rider in a 4 p.m. contest.
