BALTIMORE, Md.
- The Marist men's swimming and diving team kept up their strong showing on the
final day and session of the H2ounds Invitational on Saturday. In the four team meet, Marist finished with
victories over Saint Peter's at 259-104 and Iona at 238-126, while the
defending MAAC Champion Loyola held them off at 193-175. Sophomore Nick Spinella
and
Jason Ruddy earned were victorious Red Foxes in the final session.
The
Red Foxes finished their meet with six more events in the afternoon. Session
Three began with a second place showing in the 200-yd medley relay. The all-freshmen
"A" team of Dylan Cummings, Evan Uy, Ruddy and John Spitzer finished .37 seconds back at
1:25.92.
The
200-yd backstroke was the first individual event of the afternoon. Spinella
earned his second win of the day in the backstroke discipline as he cruised to
victory with a time of 1:51.08, 3.68 seconds ahead of second place. Cummings
and Daniel Collins earned third and fourth place finishes with times of 1:57.52
and 1:59.89.
Ruddy
earned the squad sole victory of the session with a 1:52.76 result in the
200-yd butterfly. From a historical standpoint, the freshman's time was just
.47 off of Mark Esolen's school record of 1:52.29. Miller joined Ruddy amongst
the top four, as he swam to a time of 1:56.38.
In
the 100-yd freestyle, Spitzer finished in third place with a time of 48.26.
The
Red Foxes placed a trio of swimmers in the top seven in the 200-yd breaststroke
as Uy led the group with a time of 2:12.60. He was joined by Brian Shannon in fifth
place at 2:12.83 and Patrick Shea in seventh at 2:15.61.
In
the final event of the meet, the 400-yd freestyle relay, Marist's "A" team of
Spitzer, Alex Lombardi, Ruddy and Spinella finished in third with a time of 3:12.45.
With
their 2-1 showing at the meet, the Red Foxes improve their season record to 4-4
and MAAC mark to 2-3. The team will be off from competition until 2012 when
they get into the homestretch of their schedule with meets on four consecutive
weekends beginning with a meeting at Lehigh on Saturday, Jan. 7.
