BALTIMORE, Md. - The Marist women's swimming
and diving team finished their final session of competition at the H2ounds
Invitational with five wins in six events. Overall, the Red Foxes completed the meet with three
wins; a 298-54 victory over Saint Peter's 298-54, a 263-104 score versus Iona
and a 251-119 score versus Loyola. Red-shirt junior Erica Vitale (Sterling,
Conn.) led the squad with two individuals wins in Session Three.
The final set of events began with the "A" team of Vitale, Greta Leberfinger,
Emily Miles and Maddie Arciello swimming to a two second victory in the 200-yd medley relay
with a time of 1:47.52.
Vitale
earned her first individual win of the meet with a dominant showing in the
200-yd backstroke. The red-shirt junior won with a time of 2:04.62. Allison Kreho
finished in second place with a time of 2:07.06, while Shannon Toal (Rye Brook,
N.Y.) took sixth at 2:13.53.
Three
events later, Vitale collected her second victory with a 2:06.74 time in the
200-yd butterfly. She led a quartet of Red Foxes, who went 1-2-3-4 in the race.
Miles, Amanda Letchko and Leanna Brittis followed with times of 2:07.76, 2:10.34 and 2:10.71,
respectively.
Leberfinger
finished her strong competition with a win in the 200-yd breaststroke at
2:17.06. That time puts her within a second of the school record, as well as
the NCAA Division 1 B-Standard.
In
the 100-yd freestyle, Arciello and Michelle Fountain earned third and fourth place
finishes with times of 52.54 and 52.99.
The
Red Foxes closed out the meet with a 2.77 second victory in the 400-yd
freestyle relay. The "A" team of Arciello, Bonnie Orr, Fountain and Kate Conard came in
with a time of 3:33.44.
With
their three wins, the squad improves to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the MAAC, the
best eight meet start in Head Coach Larry VanWagner's nine years at the helm of
the women's team. They will be off for the rest of the 2011 calendar year
before closing their regular season with four consecutive meets starting on
Saturday, Jan. 7 at Lehigh.
