Box Score

TOWSON, MD. - The Marist softball team was defeated 6-5 Tuesday afternoon at Colonial Athletic Association opponent Towson University. Junior Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Megan Lamoureux (Woonsocket, R.I.) and Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) each had two hits and scored a run.

Towson opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on a solo home run by first baseman Andrea Stevenson. Marist responded in the top of the fourth inning with three straight hits by freshman Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.), DiVirgilio and an RBI single by Danielle Koltz (Chenango Bridge, N.Y.) to start the inning, and even the score at 1-1.

After it held Towson scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, Marist took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth after a leadoff single by Klemmer, a Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) sacrifice bunt and a Lamoureux RBI single.

Towson's first five batters reached base in the bottom of the fifth as the Tigers' big inning was capped by three runs on two hits, two walks and two fielding errors by the Red Foxes, giving them a 4-2 lead. Centerfielder Erica Stasch hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend Towson's lead to 5-2.

The Red Foxes rallied in the top of the seventh inning, loading the bases on consecutive one-out singles by Christina Lausch (Lancaster, Pa.), Schell and Lamoureux. Towson made a pitching change, but issued a bases-loaded walk to Birnbaum. DiVirgilio blasted a two-run double to tie the game at five apiece.

Marist starting pitcher Emily Osterhaus (Suwanee, Ga.) retired the first two Tigers in the bottom of the seventh, and walked Towson second baseman Lindsey Kent. Towson right fielder Brianna Jones stepped in and hit a ball to second base that was mishandled, allowing Kent to score the winning run from first base.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Red Foxes, and dropped their record to 8-9 overall; Towson improved to 10-12 on the season.

The Red Foxes will return to action tomorrow, March 16 when they take on Maryland Eastern Shore in a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
