HAMPTON, VA. - The Marist softball team earned its first win of the season after a 9-2 win over Brown on the first day of the Lady Pirate Classic hosted by Hampton University. Six of the Red Foxes' runs were accounted four with a pair of three-run home runs by freshman Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.) and junior Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). In the first game of the day, Marist fell to Rutgers 9-4.
Eight players scored a run in the win over Brown as sophomore Emily Osterhaus (Suwanee, Ga.) picked up her first win of the season. She scattered five hits and gave up two unearned runs. Osterhaus struck out five batters. Offensively, freshman Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) and junior Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) each collected a pair of hits. Marist totaled seven in the game.
The Red Foxes scored two runs in the first. Junior Ashley Corriss (Sayville, N.Y.) led off with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt got Corriss to second, she scored on Zahka double to left center field. She was plated one batter later, when DiVirgilio singled up the middle.
Osterhaus held Brown hitless for the first 2.1 innings and retired nine of the first 11 batters she faced.
Birnbaum blasted a three-run home run to left field in the third to put the game out of reach. She drove in Megan Lamoureux (Woonsocket, R.I.) and Zahka. The Red Foxes tacked on three additional runs on a Schell three-run shot down the left field line in the fifth.
In the first game Rutgers scored nine of the game's first 10 runs to take the victory.
Marist (1-6) returns to action at the Lady Pirates Classic on Saturday, March 5 against Maryland Eastern Shore.
